Post subject: Removing the grille on my KK??
PostPosted: Sun Oct 31, 2010 10:58 pm
The other weekend I tried removing the grille on my KK but I could only get it partially off. It was like there were clips on the bottom of it that I couldn't find. Anyone know how to take it off?

I have a silver renegade and my goal is to have a completely black front (grille and lights). I already have the lights but I cant get the grille off. Im planning on just buying an OEM black one from the dealer and putting that on because I dont have the supplies nor abilities to paint the one I have.

How do you think it will look? I got the idea when I saw a wrangler with a different body/grille colors.

I think the silver jeep with a black grille is a great look. Reminds me of the liberator concept.

Removing the grille itself is actually pretty easy, you just undo the clips on the top, tilt the grille forward and pull up. It takes a bit of muscle, but the clips which are attached to the bumper will eventually just pop out. Don't worry about breaking them, they are made to do this. I included a link to a previous post about painting the headlights with a few pictures.

I hope that helps, and be sure to take pics when you get it done!

I've had my grill off this week finishing a HID upgrade. There is one clip on each side (to the outside of each headlight) almost even with the point of the turn signal lamp. I too was afraid I was going to break them. If you have long skinny arms like me, you can lay on your back under the bumper and run your hand up from the bottom through the small hole on the inside of the fender and release the tabs from the inside.

thanks guys. Im going to the dealer this weekend because they need to replace a few things in my interior so Ill have them price out a new grille. I need to think of a few other things to set it apart from all the other libertys around here.

I just took off the grille to make sure I could actually get it off before I bought anything for it. I was successful but I have a new problem/dilemma. I talked to the parts guy at the dealership by me and he had a few ideas.

First he said the only color black grille they have is shiny and sparkles. He said if want to get that theres no problem but he thinks it might look weird and I kind of agree with him. His idea was to go to a body shop around here and see what it would cost me to have them paint it for me. That would probably be cheaper than buying a new one from them, because its around $400. This way Id be saving money, and I could get any black I wanted.

Now my current question is, what color/type of black? matte black? shiny black without the sparkles like the OEM?

Any ideas?

I vote for a Diggerized grill. Line-X it!

haha ive thought about it! I want a matte black but Im afraid regular matte black would chip and scrape really easily but Im just assuming that its different than regular paint. The roads by me are really bad, especially during the winter. Line-xing it might not be a bad idea. is it expensive?

It should be pretty cheap to shoot just the grill in Line - X
