Ok LOST folks, I am putting together a kit to take with me scrappin. I don't want to get crazy with stuff like an onboard welder ok, but I would like a list of must haves that will fit in a Rubbermaid tote or some such thing. Here is what I was thinking would be a good start. Let me know if these are good things to take, or not so much. Thanks!

Jumper cables
compressed air cans- blowing out air filters and such
normal socket/wrench set
couple of cans of fix a flat- don't know if these would really help on trails tho...
zip ties
duct tape-for the kids??
Water jug
small hand saw- we go up in the woods
compact shovel
flash light
spare batteries
MRE's
shelter half and gilly suit....lol kidding
tow strap
flares? not so sure about these
starter fluid
and of course...PEANUT BUTTER!!

Did I miss anything?

Check this out: http://www.4x4now.com/4whtbcr.htm I just stumbled upon it and haven't read it all yet, but it's got a list of tools and stuff that would be smart to bring along. I have a list on my home computer that's in pdf format, although I don't remember where I got it. Try checking 4x4 magazine websites, a lot of times they have "beginner" articles with lots of info on recovery and repairs.

Duct tape is one of the best inventions known to man. In the Army we called it 100mph tape, because it will hold "up to 100mph". LOL. My beginners kit includes a tow strap (although I haven't mounted my hook yet), metric set of wrenches, a quart of all vital fluids. 2 gallons of distilled water. 2 maglites, zip ties, one can of fix a flat, wd40 and 4 or 5 flares. Like I said my kit is a beginner's too.

Yeah I have a few mre's ( daughter loves them so she has broken into most of my stash ) they don't roll with me in the jeep. And you are right E-tools rock they are compact and can also serve as a weapon if need be! ( yes they work well when you have to make a deposit ) :)

A few things I have in mine(mostly in old wooden ammo box from a garage sale that's strapped down in the back of the KJ):

DC powered air compressor.
Hand Crank Powered radio/weather alert/light/siren/cell phone charger.
Heavy Gage jumper cables.
2 Cresent wrenches.
1 Channel Lock Pliers.
Rain Poncho.
First Aid Kit.
DC Powered Work/Spot light.
Blanket.
Tool Knife for repairs on the trail.
Black electrical tape.
Aluminum MSR bottle for my diesel Power Service Additive - you could use to carry fuel for a small cooking burner.
Small block of magnesium for starting a camp/cooking/warmth fire in any conditions.(use knife to shave small bits off, then strike block with knife to spark and light shavings).
30,000lb 2.5in, 30ft tow strap.
Folding Shovel (remove sand/gravel around tires)
2 long and short phillips and flat head screw drivers.
Handheld GPS unit. (in center console)
Handheld CB. (under front seat)
2 emergency flares.
emergency blanket.
sanitary sewer lid hook (job related)
hard hat (job related) - loose in back
insulated steel toe work boots (job related) - loose in back
safety flags
work gloves
winter hat
block of wood to use with factory jack due to 2" lift on Jeep.

Looking at your list I can't believe I missed a normal flash light, duct tape, and zip ties. Thanks for sharing as I'll get those in the Jeep too.

A Gerber/Leatherman utility knife and at least 50ft of 550 cord.

That cord comes in handy all the time. Those that have served in the Army and Marines know what I am talking about.

Perhaps the military poncho (better than regualr civilian types) and some blankets (especially in the winter).

How many military members (former and current) have made a floating-water tight raft with their ruck and poncho?

I do not do any series 4wheeling, but I do keep a few things in my jeep that have come in handy from time to time.

-20,000lb 20' tow strap
-3' tow strap to put around trees and things
-Small DC spot light
I keep and little thing that connects to a battery and makes a cigarate lighter for the DC spot light if im under the hood or something
-Small set of sockets, screwdrivers, channel locks, black tape, zip ties.
-jumper cables that I have used many times.
-Dring
- Pin for my hitch to hold strap in.

I believe thats about it.

Maybe that's why we call it scrappin'....cause the boys always end up fighting over whose rig is tougher, taller, more capable....lol. Brass knuckles would come in handy right then...

I found this great flashlight at Walmart today....has a magnet on the end and a swivel head so you can work hands free with light. Pretty cool I thought. Only cost ten bucks too. One thing most people haven't posted to take along is a fire extinguisher. I am sure ya all have 'em, but I thought i would mention it as it is vital if you have a fire! I have seen a couple of stuck rigs catch dead grass on fire in the summer time. Scary since the fires started in the rear and thats where the gas is.
