Brought home my new winter project last night.....

Always got to keep a project in the back barn in case I need some "dad time".
This was actually my wife's uncles, he gave it to me years back before he passed( over his two nephews :mrgreen:

), he bought it new in 1968 to use on his 12 acres. I've had it in storage behind my dad's barn for about 5 yrs now, decided to get it running. It's a Sears 1968 SS12, 12 hp tecumseh, 42" deck, 3pt hitch, single blade board plow, discs, yard cart. Looks pretty rough right now, buuut... " my dad's got an awesome set of tools, I can fix it".
Plans are to get it running and mechanicals all working, then possibly complete teardown and paint, new tires. I also want to find or build a front snow blade and rear grader for it down
the road.

YUCK, 20 yr old gas...that's going to take some cleaning :dizzy:

My dad has a 1960's (64 or 66 i think) Simplicity garden tractor/mower/snowthrower that his dad bought NEW. he still uses it every winter!! used to use it to mow the back lawn up until a few years ago when they moved, but still uses it in winter! runs great!! just an 8hp i think, but gets the job done. I'm hoping it's still running in 20yrs maybe i can inherit it!!

Some of the older small engines have problems with the new reformulated fuels and this varise from one Boutique Blend to another. Ethanol will attack the inside of some but not all fuel tanks, some carb parts, some aluminum, and some engine valves and seats. On my 46 Farmall, I had to install an inline fuel filter to keep the carb from screwing up from some weird sediment that would go right past the sediment bowl and plug the jets.
One product (red in color) you can get from NAPA that is used to seal slow weeping in a steel fuel tanks can be used to line the fuel tank to keep any Boutique Blend from attacking the inside of your tank. If the cylinder wall is tapered, you may consider having it sleeved. If your piston ring lands are not worn out and tapered, you can reuse the piston, have the bore fitted to the piston, replace the rings, and you are good to go. I* have even used this trick on VW Diesels with great success.
I suggest you check out the forums for older small engines, they will be great for tips and parts sources.

Thanks for the info. The motor was supposedly rebuilt yrs back, not sure what I have. I'll drip some tranny fluid down plug hole, let it sit for a bit and manual turn it over, check for compression. The whole fuel system/carb/tank will be cleaned/overhauled with new lines/filter before even trying start up.
I'm on www.mytractorforum.com and there are a bunch of guys that have these old tractors and also a separate small engine section....I haven't even touched the surface and been reading for two weeks on that site.

Both are 1966 John Deere 110s

I'm not sure how collectible the Sear tractors are, but the accessories you have may be worth a few dollars. Either way, it's a fun hobby.

That glass bowl is called a sediment bowl. Water and junk will settle in it, then just empty the bowl.

As much as I like the JD greenies, this one was free :mrgreen:

If I do restore it back to factory condition, it's still only worth about 5-600 so I guess it's like restoring an old car, never get back what you'll put in it. The implements that I have are plentiful around here so they aren't worth a whole lot, but I still have them!
Yeah, thanks Terry, I figured out the bowl thing while doing searches, I just hope I can remove it without breaking anything, the nuts/bolts holding it on are pretty rusting,...PB Blaster!!!!
Still haven't done anything with it other than pulled plug, poured some tranny oil down the cyl, and actually got it to turn over hooked to the boost on battery charger, seems to have decent compression. I need to degrease it all soon so I can start tearing fuel system apart them try to see if it will run....then possibly a complete teardown, not sure yet.

IMHO, Tahoe, I'd get it running and call it a day.

I considered restoring one of my 110s, but the fact is if I strip, re-paint and rebuild it i'll never use it again. Heaven forbid it get scratched after all that time and money. These old tractors are built to be used.

Sort out the mechanical problems and enjoy it.
