Remote Start: Mopar vs Viper or others...

So I'm going to be putting a remote start in my 06 KJ, I'm leaning towards Mopar to keep it closer to OE, but Viper's SmartStart is very tempting...

I have a remote start from Clifford on my KJ. Clifford is a sub-brand of Viper & practically interchangeable for modules & stuff if you want to add to it down the road.

I have the Viper 5701 system. It's the BOMB!
If you're are just looking for remote start maybe go OEM. But if you want remote start and an awesome security system go with Viper.

i have a viper alarm with remote start too. paid way too much for the install from a local shop though. could have went to best buy and got a better alarm for cheaper. anyways, the alarm is awesome and the remote start it a nice thing to have too.

Yeah, not really interested in any added security, if I went with Viper I'd probably go with the 5101 or the 5301 or the similar Clifford system if it'd save any money.

With Clifford you get the same exact thing & typically cheaper. I know my alarm & starter from my shop with the Viper logo would cost another couple hundred easy.

What about python or any other Directed brand? Heard any good/bad about them?

Viper / Python are EXACTLY THE SAME on the higher end. i used to sell DEI. they created the Python brand for dealerships in close vicinity to Viper dealers... so they could both sell an awesome product but not the "same" product (name only)

i always had Viper becuase of where i worked. and i will honestly say, out of the 300+ remote starts we installed every year, over the 5yrs i worked there, we had no more than 3 issues with them, and DEI replaced the part immediately under the lifetime warranty. Now that i don't work there, the old installer quit as well and picked up Python (cuz the shop still handles Viper) and i've had a few Pythons in mine & girlfriends recent vehicles, love them just the same!! I have the Python two-way. the range is fantastic, which is the best selling point. i do have the alarm on my Jeep, which is nice to have just for kicks, also lock/unlock from the python remote too and with the 2-way i know if it's started or locked/unlocked etc. great piece.

i will, however, say that there are a lot of other good products out there, but no matter what you choose the install is 85% of making it work properly everytime!!! assuming you're going with a good unit to begin with. even the best unit will be junk if it's installed poorly.

Makes sense that installation will be the cause of most of the issues or the reason you never have any...I know of where I'm going to get the AM one installed if I get it, but not sure about if I go Mopar...I don't want to pay dealer premium labor rates...

most "good" audio shops will be charging $60+ an hour as well... the difference between them and the dealership, is the audio shop does alarms and remote starts nearly EVERY DAY!!!! whereas the dealerships do not do them too often, and the guys hate them! it will take them longer, and won't be as nicely done (usually)

Our techs love remote starters... the OEM ones at least since most of it is just programming.

I'm partial to the Clifford / Avital line from DEI.

I worked for Clifford / Avital for 7 years before they were bought up by DEI, so I'm familiar
with the engineering behind the products. In fact: much of what gives DEI's products
their range, reliability, features was incorporated from the Clifford line of products once DEI owned them.

BTW.... if you're gonna do a remote starter, spend the few extra bucks for the combo
(starter & alarm)..... I get a $200 discount on my insurance for the one installed in my wife's van.

I was pricing a Viper system from BB and they said it needed special module to interface with the factory keyless entry. I want to get rid of those huge key/fob combos. I prefer just keys and separate fobs. I already bought some new keys and programmed them so I'm ready to go there (thank you ebay). Anyway, they were looking at a total price of close to $600 installed for alarm, keyless entry, remote start and using only the alarms fobs. Does that sounds about right?

Yeah the price sounds about right. I thought it would be a little cheaper though but that depends on the system you are getting. I actually paid a little more for mine because it was done by a private shop. What specific system are you going with? BB sells the two way receiver which is really nice and is what I should have went with but oh well.
