1997 Discovery

We took in a Land Rover with 69K miles on the ODO last week for $2500. One of the other managers slapped his plate on it and took it home for the weekend to see if he could get war dept approval to purchase... I found out today that he failed. So I'm next in line.

It's very good but not perfect... anything that's broken off is in a pile in the trunk. Runs well, all sunroofs work as well as all power windows. The DS power seat works, the PS power seat does not. AC blows cold, heated seats do too. It does not shift into 4 Lo but from what I have read on the forums, this happens 100% of the time to the used Rover buyer since most Rover owners never pull the lever and all the linkages corrode and it has to be rebuilt. I could hope that's all the problem is but I don't know fro sure yet.

I have the opportunity to buy this for what we paid plus doc fees. Based upon my research, it seems this same vehicle with twice the miles is going for 3x this much so I don't think that I got a lot to loose.

Any Land Rover peeps out there?

Bigger tires
and for goodness sake, get rid of those step rails.

Definitely worth the price unless it has been in a serious wreck and the frame is not very good.

we owned that same one but a 96. get rid of the brush guard, ours rusted off..the ladder if its on their is a POS. same with the step on the back. check the seal on the LEFT upper window on the third row for a leak. and check the t-case shifter, they tend to stick really bad

What is it? V8 or Tdi? I used to have a 94 Tdi Auto great 4x4 a part from the fact that it fell apart at 180K miles and have to get rid of it. I have to admit i was a sad day...

Still if you get it have fun with it...

After some research, it seems that the cluster is not original to the vehicle and the last known ODO reading was in 2002 at 96K miles. So the true mileage is unknown and for all I know it's due for a timing chain. Since I'm already driving a KJ that's past due for a timing belt I'm not sure it's a good buy at this time. It drives very nicley and goes stright down the freeway. If only it were 2007 again....

I'm going to think about this.

No Land Rover TDIs are available in the US, too many Acid Head Hippies got jobs in the EPA and CARB. :banghead:

Hi,

this weekend I went to vist my family back in Rome Italy and to my surprise I was greated by this.....

My brother had bought this for personal use & for his business (He runs Motorcycle tours in Italy)

it's a TD5 Auto !!!!

I must say I did like it and compared to the old Tdi 300 Auto I had is a lot better, but compare to the KJ well I am more comfortable in the KJ than in the Disco ( I am 6ft3inc and not excactly slim eighter :oops:

)

Didn't get the chance to take it Off road, that will be next time ( he only collected the car 2 days before and wouldn't have been to impressed with me if I took it offroad before him... :ROTFL:

)

It's the right color. Does it have the air suspension?

Probably once it's fixed will be better reliability wise compared to my LR3...

Yes, Series 200 & 300 had no air suspention, Disco 2 depending on the market has and hasn't air suspention, my bothers "luckly" enought hasn't, so one less thing to worry about. Don't get me wrong it rides a lot better that my old 300 even after i put heavier duty coils & schoks.

Actually mine has only needed a new dryer in the compressor, I think it was a TSB.

The British have never ever produced a reliable car.

JL, I would advise against this purchase. The Disco's are a pos and parts prices in the US are as high as JEEP parts overhere. (think $500 for a waterpump, $100 for a thermostat etc)

Unless you want to resell it right away....then maybe...(but I wouldn't buy it

)

mine needed 6 total air bags replaced in its lifetime, new compressor and new gastank..when i got it, the worst problem it had was the rear diff, the locker and spider gears...something happened, and the rear driveshaft twisted up from a few feet long to about 6 inches long.

other than that, great truck

You know we utilize an absolute ton of NTVs (non-tactical vehicles) over here for OEF (per COIN...winning the hearts and minds). The majority of what we use are toyota landcruisers (wtf soldiers don't need heated leather seats!), landrovers, and suburbans. It'd be nice to have more landrovers with uparmoring because you can actually see better...

That being said I wish we could get some Liberty CRD love over here. Would love to cruise the strip in Kabul in a libby CRD, then take it out to the range and play around on my down time.
