Poll is closing tomorrow.

Points taken: we probably have more user on this forum who have had problems because this seems to be the premier spot on the web for CRD owners in the US. A simple google search will prove this.

My consensus - CRD is still a great vehicle. Wish they still sold them in the US.
:JEEPIN: :google:

Yeah I've noticed that too. I'm wondering how much of it is faulty parts/engineering/design and how much of it is user error (using the wrong oil, wrong oil filters, not letting it heat up before taking off when cold, not letting it cool down before shutting off when hot, etc.)

Add to that misdiagnosis from Techs who know gassers well but do not know diesels.
With diesels, unless you have a good oil separator such as the Provent, oil in the hose between the turbo and inter cooler from CCV is normal. With the economy depressed and new sales soft, the parts and service departments are expected to bring in more money. Add to that Service manager bonuses and Techs who make money by beating flat rate, Turbo replacement is a money maker, hence more turbo failures than normal.

Your poll might not be entirely accurate -- some who had engine failure may have opted not to repair it, and are no longer on this site.

very true. however, it appears that the die hard jeep/diesel fans make their way to this forum...So, I think it is a better capture than most "normal owners". So, my assumption is that most who have had major engine problems on this forum...would probably know if it was a true engine problem.

Plus if you have a CRD engine failure :google: will find this site and you might put up a post.

And some that have not had engine failure may not be on this site either.

Your poll is flawed. If you vote "no" then you can never change your answer to "yes" in the event your engine fails.

That is true, I thought about that, but hopefully no one will have to do this soon

personally I remember about 4 fails - Geordi and Jinstall are still with us - but there were 2 others - that have made 1-2 posts and then left - at least one sounded like a dealership did an oil change and test started it before they refilled the oil - never heard the results, the other had his engine apart - don't remember if he mentioned an initial cause.

I bought an '06 with 133K miles on it from a used car lot. Engine checked out ok when I bought it but about 1500 miles later it sucked a valve destroying the piston and punching a hole in the head. I would guess it was caused by a failure of the valve keeper rather than something wrong with the maintenance of the engine. Lucky for me I had gotten the car for a very low price. Now I have a Libby with a new engine at a price that is a lot higher then I paid originally but still in the range of a good, low mileage used one from a dealer.

I don't get how the engine could inject a valve, just out of the blue. Something must have been ging on was the timing belt done?

DarbyWalters had the same issue when he bought his brand new CRD,at 8000 miles it dropped a valve into the combustion chamber, the keeper failed was the cause if I remember correctly.

I was speaking to the Service Manager at the local jeep dealer last night about the new Glow plugs ETC. and we got to talking about engine problems with the CRD.

He mentioned that he knew of only one. A few months ago a CRD was sent to them from Florida, it needed a new head due to a leak, this was the second time around for the head gasket to go and the work was previously done by another dealer. They assumed that the previous dealer didn't repair it correctly the first time. The CRD had Florida plates on it and it was towed to CT for the work.

Per the Service Manager, "they couldn't find a crack in the head but replaced the head anyway to make sure that the head wasn't the problem.

$5100.00 dollars later it was fixed or so it seems. The owner is fighting over the repair costs with Chrysler.

Good luck.

Was there any warning about the valve failure? Any way to predict or (better) prevent it? That sounds like a design flaw that could end up hurting all of us...

Just because there is a failure of a certian type here and there does not make it a design flaw.Stuff breaks,it always has and always will and nothing will ever change that.

When at the dealership we had a 6.6 Duracrap injection pump go out,2 miles on it and barely got it off the transport. No design flaw it just broke. It happens, even with brand new parts no matter who made it.

You all are a bunch of conspiracy theorists.
