Just the heading of this thread alone is a confirmation of my decision to end my 5 1/2 years with the CRD. I can't think of any other car thread (except maybe chevy vega or yugo-if there were such things back then) that ever had threads about "catastrophic engine failure" and other similar lines. Owning a CRD is like being in an abusive relationship-when its good, its great, but you never know when that frying pan is going to swing at your head.

Your six year old vehicle MIGHT have catastrophic engine failure, so you will get rid of it? That doesn't sound like anything particular with the CRD. Sounds like somebody just wants a new vehicle.

I'll wager thare are a number on this board who will make you an offer for that "piece of junk". :seuss:

While I put 'yes' on the poll, performance wise, I had no issue. Just a little yellow light. Fixing the little yellow light required a new long block, turbo, injectors, and a few little other parts...

If it had been on my dollar, black electrical tape would have fixed the little yellow light just as well.

again, this was just to get an idea. I know many gassers have cracked head engines on the 4.0 cherokee's. Probably a much higher percentage that this poll includes.

you do realize that no poll on LOST can be representative of anything other than LOST.

i.e. easily 90% of CRD owners have never heard of LOST - much less be active members.

and we are not a statistically random sample.......

Actually we are a unique group that pays much more attention to our engines and their maintenance, where as the rest of the world might just get in, turn the key, and take it to Jiffy lube every once in a while. So this is a poll of Lost CRD owners, it has significance amongst the people that pay more attention.

regardless, it's a sample poll. The users on this forum know more than the average Joe.

first thing that comes to mind when someone says "Catastrophic Engine Failure" (without reading into it) - Your engine is dead and you need a new engine, or engine rebuild.

Statistically speaking, I think this is an accurate poll, unless people are lying.

Plus, if there are 11 engines on backorder for Chrysler and we say that there are only 5000 CRD's still on the road - then that would be (someone check my math) .02% engine failures, that people are fixing.

Ya but we are also more likely to get people who have an engine problem, decide its time to search the internet for help, and then find their way onto the forums. These are people who would have never joined the forum if it weren't for the mechanical trouble, further there are more people who lurk but NEVER post.

So that makes it an accurate poll based on Lost members with CRDs that actually do post. It is good enough for most of us, otherwise the poll feature should be disabled for the web site.

How about a poll, to see if polls are useful? Read below, "We are a body of persons that are active in the Lost CRD section."

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/poll

4 a (1) : the casting or recording of the votes of a body of persons (2) : a counting of votes cast

This poll is accurate for me, because I do not lurk and did not come here for a catastrophic problem. All in all the CRD is a turd, with no proven longevity, keep your fingers crossed

Please correct your quote. I find this egregious mis-quotation offensive and unflattering. Please correct this or I will be forced to contact the lostjeeps.com moderators for resolution on your unacceptable behavior/error.

A thousand pardons. Now the only evidence of my quote of you that wasn't you is your quote of me quoting you not quoting you.

I thought I had it straight until I wrote that out...

Perhaps the question should be " Would you buy another Jeep" rather than have you had catastrophic engine problems".

My opinion and shoot me down in flames, the tunes and chips that are currently available for the CRD's are probably adding to a shortened
longevity due to the extra stresses and strains that the engine is been tuned to deliver, if you want the rip in your pants on the seat feeling when you put your foot down then live with the consequences or convert to the gasser brigade and then you will have all the power you want but no torque.

Sam- I'm still trying to fathom out what egregious means, that word doesn't appear in the southern hemisphere's dictionary

Closing the poll will not allow the gathering of future data from those vehicles owners that are just now reaching 100,000 mile mark.

We need to hear from additional CRD owners, 42 total poll responses is not worth much if the amount of liberty CRD vehicles produced exceeded 10,000.
