Help!

If you have used tjkj2002's instructions to remove the steering rack through the engine compartment (or you ARE tjkj2002) please call me at two one 0 eight four 6 seven four zero 3.

I need to finish this replacement tonight if possible and I can't seem to get the rack out! :banghead:

Thank you!

Ok, so I managed to get the old one out through the passenger side wheel well, but this required taking off the two hard lines and yanking on the passenger side tie rod to pull the internals all the way to one side, giving it clearance to twist out. Obviously this is not good for the rack and I'd like to not do that to the new rack.

How do I get the new rack in from above? I have the fans, belt, oil filter, ps pump (it was leaking too), and the little oil drip channel removed, and the front axle hanging by only the passenger side front mount but I can't seem to find an angle to get the thing in there.

If I'm following tjkj2002's instructions properly the passenger side should go in first, but where exactly should it be going? between the passenger side axle mount and the frame, between the axle mounts near the passenger side or driver's side, or somewhere else entirely? Do I have to remove the hard lines?

The more descriptive an answer anyone can give the better. I consider myself pretty competent mechanically and I'm generally very good at spacial relations, but I just can't seem to find the right angle to get this thing in there.

Thanks! :)

Just an FYI, the '03 passenger side front axle mount is just like the one on the '02. It won't swing down without removing the half shaft and all that entails.

I finally ended up getting the new rack in through the passenger wheel well instead.

That's a job I never want to do again.. . EVER. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Also discovered while I was in there that my PS pump and tthe high pressure hose were leaking as well, so I replaced those while everything was dismantled. Now I just need to go get a flush/bleed and an alignment, put my front driveshaft (with new CV joint) back on, and put my freshly repainted skid plates back on and I'll be good to go!
