Did a little bit of research and it looks like the 42rle trans is also used in the JK, along with the same trans pan. Lucky for JK owners they have a dipstick to service their trans. Im thinking, getting the dipstick and fill tube from a JK and we could possibly have a way to check/change/fill our fluid, without the costly dealership doing the work. The tube is going to be bent for a different motor but should easily be persuaded into the correct shape with a tube bender. Any input?

I did not do the search.

But I thought there was an Engine Oil stick that fit the tube we already have??
And was the right lenght.... I might be wrong...

Digger should Know, but I have not seen him posting

from what i could find the pans were different and the kj tube and dipstick would give an incorrect reading. maybe there is another chrysler product with the 3.7 and 42rle that actually has a dipstick these days. i need to do more research. i just saw my buddy check his trans fluid in his JK and was like wtf cause i thought manufacturers were doing away.

I'm not sure but it seems like I remember reading that a 06 or 07 KJ dipstick would work.

When I researched it the part numbers for the pan were different. They could be the same but idk for sure. keeping the same pan would ensure that the same amount of fluid is used and would show correctly on the dipstick.

Someone going to the their KK service next should go to the Tech and ask them what they use, then maybe we can order it. I've asked myself a few times what would work. I think is BULLCRAP that they shafted us like that.

Its suppose to be a special tool that reads the temp and fluid level. The fluid level and temp are directly related. The higher the temp the higher the fluid should read.

idk what it is but there is something to do with the 3.7l and 42rle combo that does not have the dipstick. all other 42rle have dipsticks, for instance the 4.7 and hemi commander have a dipstick but not the 3.7l models.

4.7L and 5.7L are behind the 545RFE. Put a 5.7L in front of a 42RLE, it'll tear it apart within seconds. The 3.7L doesn't make enough power to destroy a 42RLE.

Someone compare pics of the p...... hey wait, I have a KJ and a KK in the driveway. Stand by for pics. :-)r

UPDATE: It doesn't fit. The KJ dipstick won't go all the way down the KK tube since the DEALER USE ONLY cap is designed to "lock" into the tube. This would certainly give an incorrect reading even if the pan was the same. :(

As an ex- ASE tech myself who does ALL of my own maintenance, this really pisses me off too.

I'll be keeping an eye on this. I would to be able to change my own trans fluid and fill it properly. :POPCORN:

There is one available.
https://millerspecialtools.spx.com/Detail.aspx?id=847
Or http://www.etoolcart.com/chrysler-dip-stick-gauge-9336-a.aspx
Quote from the repair manual;
"The transmission Oil Dipstick 9336 has indicator marks every 10mm. Determine the height of the oil level on the dipstick and using the height, the transmission temperature, and the Transmission Fluid Graph, determine if the transmission oil level is correct."
Another couple of quotes from the SM;
"The dipstick will protrude from the fill tube when installed."
"Warm up the transmission, wait at least 2 minutes and check the oil level with the engine running.
Push the Oil Dipstick 9336 into transmission fill tube until the dipstick tip contacts the oil pan and pull outagain, read off oil level, repeat if necessary."
One of the keys to using it is, that you need to be able to monitor the transmission fluid temperature. The reading on the dipstick will vary quite a bit with every 10 Deg. warmer or cooler.
Trany fluid Level 42rle

Without a scan-gauge tool it would be difficult to determine the temperature of the fluid.
However, if I had an automatic and the fluid level was somewhere in the upper-mid to upper range on the dipstick, once the transmission is warm, I would be comfortable with that.
On level ground of course.
But I must caution anyone about doing this on your own. I have merely supplied some information and my opinions here.
I am not responsible for how you use this information, or any possible damage that may occur from you not servicing your vehicle properly.

Now if someone were to get a dipstick, have there trany serviced by a dealer, and then imediatly check the level. We would have some "Real" numbers to go by...

Hmmm... when my wife gets home i'll have to hook up my scan tool to see if i can read the trans temp. If so, im set (or it gives me a reason to upgrade to a better scanner :rockon: )

i did the trans oil change on my 06 sprinter no dip stick and all no leaks any where so measured oil out and filled the same amount. mani i would just use a dip stick and make your own markings check cold level mark it check hot level mark it and done.
