Had another hard, long crank start this morning. It's only done it twice since I had crappy fuel problems (WIF light) and replaced the filter. So I don't hang this to happen to the girl friend when I'm not around to fix it. I know the fuel is good not it just took a motmot cranking and spuddering to start.

What pump should I get? Any good places to buy from?

I like the idea of an in-tank lift pump. I just did this job so I can cut and paste from my notes.

Quote:
The CRD has a tendency to trap air in the fuel filter which leads to a rough running engine. The solution is to add a lift pump in the fuel tank. The in-tank lift pump sending unit is from an '05 to '06 Dodge Ram 2500 or 3500 (part # 5143160AA).

Dodge has currently updated this part with (I believe) a higher psi pump which may not be suitable for our application.

There was some early forum comments warning to not put in a lift pump that was too aggressive. I was lucky enough to find an older stock lift pump from the dealer. I think the Dodge guys found that the original 8 (or so) psi wasn't enough for them and updated their pumps to 15 (or so).

Maybe someone here who has the newer version pump installed can comment.

Am i missing something?
what's the problem if the PSI is 15 from the new style intank lift pump?
it feeds the same injector pump, the CP3.

I use a 4psi Kennedy Lift pump. I prefer not to drop a tank to install an inline pump.

It's not the same injector pump  Ours has a gear pump on the end that is supposed to not need a lift pump and the Dodge Cummins does not:dizzy:
Mr Mopar stated that if the pressure is too high funny things happen.

so let me see I have this right..
the Cummis has no gear pump? so input pressure to the pump might be critical.
in the Jeep we have a gear pump..so too much pressure on the input side could only damage seal..I would guess that the difference between 4psi and 15psi won't blow any seals. if the FSM manual is correct the gear pump ups the pressure to around 70PSI before its fed to the 3 pumps in the CP3..and air is purged back into the return line..

so why does 15psi matter?

if 15psi effected the CP3 output pressure it still would be 15/20,000 instead of 4/20,000..
think noise..shouldn't matter..15/20,000= 0.00075. and .4/20,000=0.0002..
keep in mind the CP3 in the Jeep will pull 20 inches of vacuum..more than both of those numbers..yes I measured the vacuum of a CP3. in a Jeep.

so buy the current version of the Cummis intank life pump and don't worry about it.
