ok.. was thinking since spring is near.. that I might as well go ahead and put new brakes on my KJ.. my friend couldnt wait so he had to get his brakes done last week.. total cost with labor was over $300 for front and back.. OUCH.. i know his were bad his wife drives his and she has a long commute down a very curvy/steep mountain road.. so his brakes were ready for sure to be changed.. mine seem ok but with 50K i think its about time to put on new ones.. i have installed brakes on a few of my prevous cars before as well as some of my dads cars.. however now i moved i dont have access to my dads help or his tools so i will more then likely have to buy brake specific tools (if any) so anyone who knows how to do this.. i have the manual *cough pdf cough* just wondering if there are any specific tools needed and/or anything to look for when I am changing them.. any information greatly appreciated.. or if anyone lives close enough to the NC/TN border that has done this before. let me know..

for the front you don't need anything special, just a C-Clamp, and and tools, getc some brake grease for the contacts.

the back I haven't done yet. if you hace disc, it should be simple.

All you need on the front is a C-clamp, and set of sockets. Since you have disc on the rear, they should be the same as the front. Get back if you have any problems.

If it's the same as the 02 :

To replace only the pads, you won't have to remove the "adapter" that attaches with the large bolts. The calipers will come off when you remove only the small bolts. I wrestled with that until I took a closer look.

Put those bolts back with a drop of blue LocTite maybe. A few days later, one of mine had backed out and gotten lost. I had to get a replacement bolt ( The new one is a little shorter I think) after hours at a parts store.

If you intend to remove the rotor to surface it or replace it, you will have to remove the large bolts. Mine haven't been out yet. It would be much easier to get more leverage for those on a lift. :?

Since you've done them before, you know not to hang the caliper from the brake hose. I winced when I recently walked over to the neighbor's and saw his caliper dangling by the hose on a honda......

I also recommend if you have front anti-lock brakes (Does it ?) loosen the bleeder screw when you retract the piston. Don't push the old brake fluid up into the expensive anti-lock mechanism.

It's easy to do. Just make surey ou get a good cleaning first. We spent about 4 hours dealing with the caked-on mud.

the only thing I'd recommend is that you try and get your rotors ground down while the calipers are off. It's about $35 per set at NTB, etc.
