Hello Everyone,

I recently took my '06 Liberty 4x4 (stock, 93k miles) in for a check up and was told that there is "play" in the front carrier bearing in the transfer case. At first the repair shop told me it was a basic repair where just the bearing could be swapped out but then said when they called Chrysler that the whole drive shaft needs to be replaced because the bearing is sealed inside.

Can anyone give me any intel on this? Is there a way to test whether this bearing needs to be replaced? And is it true that the whole drive shaft would need to be swapped out or is there a cheaper way to repair only the bearing?

Would really appreciate advice from anyone with knowledge on this.

Also want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas!

Warm regards,

Greg

Greg,

I think your mechanic ment that the rear CV on the propshaft to the front diff has play.

No bearings involved.

If you can confirm that, then we can help you.

You can get a repair kit for that shaft.

If it's not that, have him point out on this diagram which bearing Chrysler doesn't want to sell.

Or was he talking about the front halve shafts? Or the intermediate shaft within the front diff?

Tony,

Thanks so much for this info. I really appreciate it. Will speak to the mechanic next week and try to diagnose.
