Checking out some Libby CRD's. What are their problems? Weaknesses? etc. What is the best year? 05 or 06?

I am NOT new to diesel. I have a 95 Ram Cummins 12Valve!!! 8) I am pretty good at mechanics. I have rebuilt many Subaru engines and had to change the head gasket on my Cummins from boosting 45p.s.i!!!! :ROTFL:

Thanks and shoot some info!!! :D

06 you have the ESP in the rear, which is nice unless you go offroad...

Have you checked out the NOOB Guide in this forum?

http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=54207

That covers the common stuff that goes wrong and the weaknesses... The strengths... well you KNOW diesels so besides the normal Torque, the Liberty sure has a nice turning radius

I read the above post already. I guess I would have to change that TC. Chrysler/Dodge tranny's seem to be weak behind diesel engines!!! :dead:

The tranny is super strong for our application. It's the torque converter where DCX cheaped out. The new revised Wrangler TC however, is more than strong enough for any tune you can put in the little beast.

The Euro is what the Stock converter should have been from day one, VM tried to tell Chrysler but they did not listen or could not hear over the Bean Counters screaming Cut Cut Cut.
If you want a stronger converter SunCoast and other billet cover converters are stronger.
The Transgo kit fixes other problems like the crappy check valve in the front pump and the weak valve plate on the valve body.

Problems:

1. Clueless dealer mechanics
2. Weak torque convertor
Suncoast TC or Euro TC (newer OEM) are the cure
3. F37 tune on transmission done by Chyrsler/Jeep
GDE Tranny tune fixes this.
4. OEM fuel head leaks fuel/air
Replace w/ Racor head (perfect fit...used to be on older CRDs exported overseas or new OEM)
5. No lift pump
Replace with Dodge intank lift pump or Kennedy lift pump installed inline (no dropping tank)
6. Ceramic Glow plugs
Nationwide shortage of ceramics and steel replacements are missing in action
7. EGR Valve fails regularly
Replace every couple years or get a GDE tune
Install a Provent CCV filter to filter out oil from the intake.
8. Airflow control valve fails (OEM original)
Replace w/ newer one that has metal gears instead of plastic gears. GDE tune disabled code from lighting a MIL if mine fails
again.
9. ESP/Traction Control/ABS system wiring is very frail with wires breaking in the harness. A blast to trace and repair or replace
harness.
10. CAC hoses (hoses from turbo to intercooler and hose from intercooler to intake) fail without warning causing limp mode/lost of boost. Solution: Newer OEM hoses seem a little better or you can spend $$$ for SAMCO
11. Many CRDs w/ over 100k miles have not had their timing belt/rollers/tensoners/and water pump replaced
12. Pax side engine mount is known to fail before 100k miles.
13. Alternator pulley/coupler fails before 100k miles...has left some folks stranded when their battery died.
14. Oil leaks. Some have oil leaks at turbo line fittings and some like me have a leaking valve cover gasket (very hard to replace....almost like removing the head).
15. Towing is not great in high altitude states/areas. The darn tranny won't stay in 4th gear. It'll either downshift into 3rd (no lockup causing engine/tranny temps to rise), briefly shift back into 4th but then quickly shift into 5th gear. If the tranny could stay in 4th with lockup the entire time, it would be great for towing in mountains, especially up steep mountain passes. Towing in straight line/flat roads is just fine.
16. Thermostat often fails before 100k and replacement is expensive. A local member on this website machines the t'stats in his spare time to take a standard replacement thermostat. His wait list is very long plus he is doing this at little if any profit but well worth the wait.
17. Cloth seats stain easily and steam cleaning them leaves a powdery residue that is difficult to remove.
17a. Cloth seats tear easily if you have dogs. Never had torn seats in a vehicle before until I got the liberty. Reupholstery is easy to do but time consuming....great time to install heated seats that work great!
18. Oil drain plug easy to strip if you let a knuckledragger dealer mechanic replace your oil.
Replaced with a FUMOTO valve (recommend this for almost every vehicle out there....its to easy to change oil)
19. Many complain that suspension/springs sag early due to heavy weight of engine
20. Ball joint weak, most replaced under a recall.
Moog ball joints seem to be the best solution to this issue
21. Turbo cooldown is explicitly stated in the owners manual for various types of driving but a fair number of folks don't knowabout it and don't do it. Buying a used vehicle may put you at risk of having to replace the turbo prematurely if previous owner didn't do required cooldowns.
22. Some folks (crd and non-crd) have leaking powersteering fluid from powersteerig line fittings. Replace w/ OEM or a vendor here who makes custom heavy duty lines to remedy this issue. Mine are seeping and will need replacement this spring.
23. Airfilter box is weak and not designed for airflow of a turbo diesel. My dealership has had 2 engine failures from clogged airfilters. Also airfilter box easily sucks up moisture...some folks replace with a gasser air filter box. I replace my airfilter every 10k miles.
24. Tranny dipstick pops out all of the time.
25. Oil level on dipstick is not accurate. If you fill to the full line, you are overfilling your engine causing more oil in blowboy which can increase risk of intake clogging/egr failure if you don't have a CCV filter

2005 models have 7/70000 warranty..05 models do not have ESP/Traction Control
2006 models have 3/36000 warranty (all are out of warranty)

AND FINALLY....OBSERVE A JEEP LIBERTY IN SNOW/ICE CONDITIONS....AT THE 2 MINUTE 10 SECOND MARK ON THE FOLLOWING VIDEO TAKEN IN MY HOME TOWN THIS WEEKEND ;-)

Just a note as he is in Canada. Canadian warranties were 3/60000 km bumper to bumper and 5/100,000 km powertrain.
