I found THIS intake on Rusty's Off-road and was thinking about giving it a shot, considering it's quite a bit less expensive than it's competitors, and doesn't replace the factory airbox (i'd like to keep it to siphon out water if and when i do serious crossings...). I like the idea of just a tube from the airbox to the throttle body, eliminating that stinkin' silencer box...what do you guys think about these True Flow filters...i mean it makes sense that foam will trap more dust and such and flow better than a paper filter...i mean it is the standard on all of the high performance radio controlled cars that i work with. All opinions are welcome...thanks

My 2004 libby came stock with a box like that. I dont like the idea of the foam either, I have the K&N and love the sucking sound it makes. This is in the stock box and everything. Ill post a pic if you want. I believe someone gave away a free air box in the for-sale forums, should of taken it like you do everything! I dont know what year it was though, and I dont know what year they switched either.

Ohh, thanks for taking my tcase skid! I hope they loose it in shipping and send it to my house, I would never tell either!

Hey, sorry man, what can i say, i only make $400.00 a month during a good month, $165.00 goes to my car payment and i spend at least $100.00 in gas, so i gotta take whatever deals i can find

Now, back to the issue at hand...i actually DO like the idea of a foam filter, i mean, after seeing what they trap here in the Radio Controlled car world it's surprising that more MFG's don't use them in cars....but they're probably more expensive to produce...Not to mention, a foam filter won't collapse if it gets wet, so that's one less thing to worry about. Plus, after seeing THIS test, i'm sceptical as to whether a K&N actually filters the air or not...

If i could see some pictures of your engine compartment before and after that'd be great...

Thanks,
-Savage-

lol, im just kidding you about all of that. The problem with me is I dont have any income at all, college rules!

No, im saying my jeep came stock with a stright tube to the intake. No silencer box or anything. I think they started doing that on the 04's, since you do have an 03 with the silencer box. Heres what it looks like stock.

Image

I found this on my computer. I can go out and take a better one if youd like.

edit: Ohh, yea Ive seen all those tests and things about the K&N. Some people even say they can see dust in the tube going to the intake after the filter. Ive checked mine and after 12k miles, Its as clean as can be. We have them in all 3 of our jeeps and they are all doing great. Our grand cherokee has had it for at least 5 years and its doing great.

yea, that's pretty much what i'm looking for. I would just prefer something smooth, just looks better IMHO, not to mention it just MIGHT flow a tad bit better. And i think the cost of getting that tube from the dealership would probably be just as much as if i were to get a high performance intake from say K&N or True Flow...

Oh gosh, those K&N's go for around $300 i think. If that box in the for sale forum would of been an 04, then you would of been set and it was free! I guess that True Flow would be your best bet, wonder if you can clean that thing? I guess just running water threw it would clean it.

Bless, I want one of those too! Savage, I purty sure were doing the same things to our jeep. I working on buying a powertrax right now. I cant wait to get a job this summer! I believe the only other things I 'Need' are tcase skid, gas skid, and tires. A muffler would be nice too.

Haha, yeah, sounds like we are pretty much doing the same things...

Now, back to the matter at hand, has ANYONE heard ANYTHING about these true flow filters, i really only want the tube, but if the filter is good, than i won't mind paying for the whole kit...

I have a K&N in my KJ and I have checked my air tube after every dusty trail run we take and their IS dust in the intake. I do have pics from when I recently changed out my stock 03 intake for the later model tube style shown above. I will find them and post here later. Personally I Am done w/ K&N filters.
Funny (or maybe stupid) that I used to defend them even knowing what I was seeing in my intake on my KJ and a previous vehicle that had a K&N. I am pretty much done w/ unproven claims from the aftermarket. From now on if they can't show me tested proof, I'll pass.

My black list includes:
Splitfire plugs (total junk)
Slick 50 (snake oil)
Most "Magic in a can" type additives
All those "Fresh air/ Hi-flow air tubes on Ebay, etc.)
and Now K&N filters. (there are more, just can't think of them right now)

In a clean environment, where you want/need a Full flow filter that will at least keep the bugs out, (race cars perhaps) I suppose a K&N is fine. But on a vehicle that sees dusty trails and dirt roads often, IMHO, they just are not worth it. Also, many race teams running them in bad conditions are also Often rebuilding engines to keep them at top performance anyway. So I guess a little dirt in the engine isn't so bad for them. My goal now is to keep my oil as clean as possible for as long as possible. So no more dirty air for me.

BTW, if anyone wonders what I think about the Amsoil air filters, I Will be looking at them and asking some questions on how Amsoil tested them and what Their goals were. Based on the chart linked above, they appear to be pretty balanced in the middle as far as air flow vs. filtering. Maybe needing cleaning more often though. I will report what I find out. BTW, If I don't feel they are Best or at least better than most, I won't run or recommend them. (though I do have one coming for my XJ for Moab so I will get a real world test then)

Also, one more thing, Amsoil sells Wix, Donaldson and Their air filters, so they are not biased against another brands filter IF they work well. Notice from Link above also that Wix tests pretty well balanced in the testing too. In any vehicle that I didn't run a K&N in, including my XJ, it had a Wix. (based on things I learned about them when I worked auto parts) I also dig the Wix oil filters too, FWIW.

Back to the topic.

IF you use a good air filter and can draw air from a cool location I see no problem with an air tube. A straight or at least smooth tube from the stock air box to the intake is fine too so long as it dosn't act as a heat sink as some metal tubes do. (though some will say the air isn't in the tube long enough to matter, I still want my intake air as cool as possible)
An air intake that can be isolated from the hot engine compartment air should be fine also if used with a good filter.

Ok, I'm spent now and my fingers hurt...so I'll shut up as usual. Perhaps my ramblings will kill this thread too?

Well, most of what you said is why i was attracted to the True Flow, it seems to be a servicable filter, it's a plastic tube (i think) and it keeps the stock air box....mostly, i'm just interested in the air tube, but i wanted to know if the filter was any good, or if i should just buy a different one...

I don't know enough about the filter to comment for sure. Just know I Wouldn't go w/ K&N over that one.

We have K&N's in all 3 of our jeeps, love them! Our grand cherokee has had one for thousands of miles(at least 60k) and its doing great. Airtube is good and clean, you must put alot of oil back in them.
