Hope it's not the case but your description really sounds like a rod problem to me. any "outie" dents on the oil pan?

Mine dropped a valve due to a broken valve spring at highway speeds wih no warning. Didn't make a sound like what you're describing though.

Not looking good so I'm thinking of going with a Jasper Reman'ed engine.

Figured if I got to pay to have them remove the engine and re-build it, I might as well spend a little more money and get the Jasper and a warranty.

thats the exact thing i did...so..after doing all the looking online and my mechanic having 2 liberties before have this problem...let me guess, oil pump failure and then that causes the dummy lite to go off for a minute than everything was fine causing one of the cylinders to totally bite the dust. yea, that was mine in a nutshel

I am thinking that I made the right decision back in 07 when I held out for a CRD... I heard rumors about oiling issues with the 3.7 and it's looking like they were true to a point.

Ya those awesome CRDs. My dad's although fun to drive and pull with lost a glow plug randomly and wrecked a cylinder.Resulting in a 9K repair. Not to mention several of the internals of the 2.8 are backordered for months while you're out a Jeep. How many 3.7's can you wreck due to oiling issues for 9K?

Thanks Tahoe, I'll pass the info along to my mechanic.

This valve seat issue is exactly what happened with mine at 196,000. I went with a reman and have 30,000 miles on that now.

Kinda funny as I can see as many as 4 KJ's a day in our shop and never once had a engine failure or oil pressure problem, never had one with a 3.7/4.7.The most common issue with the 4.7's is broken manifold bolts.Have sent one 5.7 to the junkyard after a Bosch +4 plug decided it wanted to be a +1.Stopped counting 4.0's I sent to the scrap heap, been that many.

The most common engine failures we diagnose are honda and toyota's with broken timing belts, gotta love those interference engines.Have had a rash of VW TDI's lately with bad cams also.

The Jasper engine is at the shop and will start going in tomorrow! Can't wait to get her back, my wife's Escape drives nice, but it's not my KJ!

A short block in a CRD cost arround $7000 +? Labor, for that price you can blow 2 gasser get the job done and still have money in your pocket to drink a cold one! I know it's not make you feel better but you gone be back on the road in a blink of a eye, If this ever happen to my CRD getting a new block may take "a bit" more time... :(

Sorry to hear about your engine. :( Kinda have an OT question, does the jasper warranty come with self installs? Or is it through the shop? The 3.7l looks like an easy swap and if the unfortunate happens Ill probably end up doing it myself if the warranty would still apply. ::knocks on wood::

Not yet, but I did tell then to just yank the old one and get me back running and then we can see what went wrong with it.

Not sure but you might check on their site http://www.jasperengines.com/index.php I know they have a spot for you to check for an installer nearest you.
