Well, answer from dearler is.... grearbox needs to come out & be inspected !!!
According to them sound like the gear selector might be have come loose or maybe a grear tooth might be missing.... the honest answer, until they don't pull it out and opening it I can tell. I have booked the Jeep in for the 26/01. I will keep you posted. At the same time I am having also the Clutch done, luckly the work on the gearbox is covered by extented Warranty 8) ... and they are happy do charge me for the parts & 1 hr labour to fit it.

Cool. When you do the clutch can you give me the price you paid(I'm assuming the dealer is going to do it?) Just so I can start saving up since mine will need done within a year or 2. :?

Thanks!

Mine also does the exact same thing I always just assumed it was typical of these trannys and have learned to either start it and let it run for a bit in the morning before leaving or just taking it real easy until it gets warmed up.

Hi, I have been doing the same thing at the begining, but now it's playing up even when warm, sometimes it just sticks when you are shifting down and up, not a lot, but enough not to be 100% safe when driving. Yesterday the dealer topped up the gearbox with some oil, it slightly better this morning but over all the same problems persit.

Just out of curiosity, what's the mileage on yours?

Just under 80K miles, so not that huge, but I am the second owner, and I think the first owner might have used it to tow a heavy trailer.....but for the last 26K miles has just taken me around and I am not that heavy :? (okay I am on a diet now  )

Just for the record, mine has 55,500 miles on it now. I believe I am the 3rd owner and bought it at 50,000 miles. I suspect the 1 of the previous 2 owners did not know how to shift real well.....

Hi All,
Quick up date. The KJ went in yesterday morning to the dealer to be fixed. At this stage the have taken the gearbox out and looked at what was wrong with it.
Here is the answer ( i haven't seen it):
"gears selectors are all worn & rusted up!!!" Looks like, somehow it had water inside (it's a sealed unit !! - inspite of me having a snorkel on the KJ I haven't had yet a chance of going through any deap water)!!!
Looks like the bill is going to be very steep....£'000. Out of curiosity I asked what a new gearbox would be and I was quote £2800.00 (US$4312.00) without labour.
Currently I am having a real go at the Warranty people as they are trying to back out of paying for the repair.

Thanks for the update!

Sucks about the warranty company though, seems like they are cheapskates.....

See if you can get any pictures of what the inside looks like!

Hi,
Well got my KJ back on Thursday. Now the gearbox changes with no problems at all, as you would expect. Clutch is a bit lighter (it's new), but I still get the odd sticking here and there, that might be me, we will see. I am waiting for the report to be written up of what was broken before I take the matter forward legally. I hope by Tuesday I should have it and i will let you know excactly what had broken.

Thanks for the update. I might have mine looked at within the next month. Since I got a bonus at work I can afford to blow it all on my tranny! :banghead:

Hi,
All is going well, for now. I had to take it back because they didn't fit the engine oil seal well and it started leaking again. All in all it does still krunch sometime when it's cold, it's not as smooth as if it was new. I have only done about 2000mls up to know and I have a year warranty on it, so let's see once I have knock up some mile if it settles down a bit.

Keltic,
Yes, that is the exact problem I had. I was told, in my case, I had had water(?!!) in it and that ruined the syncros!! had the geabox re buit by Jeep under warranty (still had to pay half!!). Now I have put 5K mls and it still chruches and occassionally sticks. Put in new Clutch & flywheel at the same time. A new Geabox for you information I was quoted £2800 GBP!!
I believe it's just KJ gearbox and if you have a good trusted gearbox specialist i would take it to them to sort out, but it's not going to be a cheap fix.

got quote of 1100 euros too rebuild it,just got new flywheel and clutch kit, will wait a month or 2 before i do a rebuild, was thinking of maybe changing cylinders but if was cylinders,it would grind in all gears i would think
will get few different quotes too rebuild gearbox and see but will hold off for awhile,my problem is i have alot of mileage over 184,000 miles,so plenty of wear and tear, have changed the rear axle too etc

You consider picking up a used unit instead of rebuilding?
