The original Optima already give 5 years of good service and with temp going -25F here I think is time to replace her, my first idea was to buy the same red top ($209can here) but after I read about Optima been sold to Jonhson Control I change my mind.

Sears dont have any auto center anymore here in Canada so I check for a Odyssey PC1500...Best price I can get is $345can with taxes! G.....No way! I got a acid deap cycle from Wallmart in my camping trailer so I use it if need and next summer I make another US camping trip

Just got the Sears Diehard Platinum P-1 8) . Thanks everyone for the good suggestions. Paid $190 for it and it has a 48 month full replacement warranty and 100 month total warranty :D . I guess the nice thing about Sears is that they are everywhere and have a good product in this case. I would recommend it. :2cents:

Never unhook the battery while the modern vehicle is running, even in a modern diesel. That is the sure fire way to fry the PCM.Plus a gas KJ will shut off if you disconnect the battery while it is running,I imagine the CRD will also since the voltage regulator is not in the alternator.

After adding a winch and actually use it often you will understand the need for those high priced batteries like a Odyessy, plus with a AGM battery no more science project will grow on your battery terminals like old school lead acid batteries. Also my 2 year old Odyessy still puts out over 1300cca's while only being rated at 880cca's.

Ok... The alternator will provide plenty of power, the voltage regulator turns that power down from high voltages to the 13-14 that a charging battery and the vehicle's systems desire.

Tell me again why the AVR would get upset if the battery was disconnected? It doesn't change the duty by changing the location of the AVR, and the AVR also has to provide power to the ECM and the rest of the car's systems. If it isn't being asked to provide charging amps to the battery, the overall power draw goes down, but not to zero. Disconnecting the battery is the fastest way to verify that your alternator is providing good power - If the engine speed dips or stalls out, then the alt wasn't providing enough energy and should be replaced at some point. This isn't a nanny function, its how cars actually work. The engine speed shouldn't change at all when disconnecting a battery, except maybe to momentarily increase as the power load decreases.

You really should base your opinions on factual experience, not the ramblings of that bearded old mechanic at FailureStone who hasn't touched a car in years. I've swapped out the battery in my KJ CRD (and just about every other vehicle I own or owned) with the engine running without any problems. The CRD doesn't "shut down" and neither did any of the others. The ONLY way that you would cause a hazard to the ECM or any other systems is if you let the positive terminal touch a ground source like the body or engine. This would short out anything connected through the charging circuits, which is why I do not like the design of our AVR. Replaceable components are better, as what happens if a battery fails internally and shorts a plate? Same result, and it could happen to anyone at any time due to a manufacturing defect.

Simply unhooking the battery and protecting that positive cable from touching anything won't hurt anything. A manufacturer even sells a portable battery device that you connect to your car to put power INTO the cables (with the engine off) to retain settings while swapping batteries. This is equally dangerous, for the same reason - Let that positive cable ground, and boom. Simple free solution: Don't let the positive cable ground if there is power in it, and nothing bad will happen.

Finally... Higher price or AGM does not equal better performance driving a winch. The battery contains a certain number of amps to deliver. Maybe your 1300ca battery just is one of the better-built of that model, and their rating of 880 is a manufacturer's-middle-range rating. Some might make less, some like yours might make more. That changes nothing for driving accessories. Either the battery can deliver the amps requested or it can't. If it can't, you need a bigger battery for the job. Science projects... Thats funny, I do like that. Honestly tho, not one of my maintenance-batteries from Costco has had the green grass problems on the terminals.

I replace it with another red top, five years is plenty and CRD will be ten year old for the next one. I only paid $149 for it at O'Reilly.

If you notice Optima is no longer owned by the same company so in reality they are no where near the red tops they used to be. Sears Platnium P-1 really heavy but huge power and it powered my fridge for 2 soild days while my car set and didn't move. Then it started right up without and isssue the morning after.

The Optima battery cost me $149 while the DieHard Platinum cosr $210. I saved $61 on a battery that proforms the same and last five years. :dead:

Blackliberty,
I'm glad you got 5 years out of your Optima battery. For some reason, mine only lasted a year and that was a fair amount of highway driving each day. I'm curious to how you got yours to last so long. Did you do anything special such as regular topoff charges?

I am still on the original Optima and have never charged it. When mine finally dies I will go with another red top. I'll have to see for myself if the new Optimas are any different.

As with everything there are always a few bad apples. Once they are out of the loop it won't ruin the batch. I could of milked this battery for another year but I like to leave my code reader plugged in. If you ever run the battery down you should slow charge it overnight.

My 1st Optima(red top) bought in '02 and before Johnson Controls owned Optima is still being used in a '81 Ford F150.I upgraded to a yellow top when I got my winch in '06,and when Johnson Controls owned Optima, and it lasted 2 years and 2 days.2 stinking days after the warranty ran out, dumb me bought another yellow top and that one lasted just over 2 years, again just right out of warranty.Highly doubtful that 2 batteries bought 2 years apart failed at the same time interval for one person. The $230 I paid for the PC1500 is money well spent since I'm already past the 2 year mark and still putting out 1300+cca's.

The PC1500 is $257 now and the Sears P1 is $203 + CA tax, don't know where to get the best battery deals. I can hold out a bit but I would replace the battery if I could get a good unit at a good price.

My costco battery came thru this morning. It was -3 deg F and I had filled up 18 gallons from a station that had the lowest diesel prices in the area. It was crap fuel that gelled up a little this morning. The CRD would start and run for about 5 seconds than stall. It took ten start attemps to get fuel flowing reliably to the engine and the costo battery worked great. I double dosed it with powerservice and then took it for a long drive to get the powerservice into the engine. Its -1 deg F outside and I took it for a spin tonight after it sat without being driven for 9 hours and it fired right up. With diesel at $3.39 at my regular station, you can understand why I jumped the opportunity to purchase fuel for $3.26. Won't do it again and stick what has worked.

I must have gotten all the bad apples in every one I have ever had. I think I have three bad red tops out in the garage right now that I am trying to figure out how to scam a warrantee replacement out of.

Sir Sam,
Maybe its the altitude that shortens their life just like high altitude has been known to kill ipods w/ internal harddrives and plasma TVs.

I've got a Walmart 850 CCA in it right now, bought that last winter when the factory Optima quit over the winter. My first choice would be (and will be next time) from Costco, in the largest size they have. Physical space isn't the issue, I have the battery turned sideways. IIRC, Costco's price for the 850cca / 1000ca big boy is only like $110. This comes standard with a full 36 month replacement (NOT prorated!) and they might have even upped it to 48 months.
.

So, what is the group # of this big battery? can you toss up some pics of how it sits in the engine bay please? i was looking at bigger batteries too, but they have the fuse box right there and i don't see how it would fit.

I've had my original Optima since I bought my Jeep in December 05. But I am with everyone else on the confusion of what to buy to replace it as it doesn't like our cold mornings or cold evenings. So a little help, don't want a cheepy but don't have a whole lot of cash either. The Sears battery is running 214 and I definitely don't have that!! :(

Wow, you really got your money's worth out of that battery. I live in AZ. and had to replace mine in my 06 in Dec. 09. Really hot here and the climate is not very condusive to making batteries and many other car parts last long, especially if there parked outside during the day, like at work. Temps here in the middle of summer have been as high as upper 120's for couple of weeks. It's a dry heat though. :ROTFL:
