My 2005 Liberty CRD decided not to to start today. I turned the key, the starter engaged briefly and then my whole dash flickered and then died. When I opened the hood I could hear a low buzzing sound coming from the fuse/relay compartment in front of the battery. I couldn't find the relay making the noise so I disconnected the battery. The buzzing went away when I reconnected the battery but it still won't start. When I turn the key one click the door chime dings and the interior lights come on. When I turn it a to acc though everything goes dark and I get no dash lights. WHen I turn it to crank the engine the dash lights flash on and off, the lock actuators engage and a few times the rear window opened. Any ideas? Don't want to have it towed to the dealership. Thanks.

Wow, that is really freaky. Must be a severe electrical problem. Hope the dealership has a good electrical man to work out the Gremlins. May be something very simple to fix. Did you happen to notice any smell of electrical something, wiring etc. burning?

I didn't smell any electrical burning. I thought that buzzing was something frying at first but there was no odor and I checked the relays and fuses for an sign of being blown and even pulled the bottom panel of the relay box... Nothing. I'm hoping it's something simple and hoped I might be able to replace something myself but I don't know where to start with this one. It was fine last night.

Really? Would jumping it be worth a shot just to see if it'll start with a boost?

Agree with JL.. You can jump it but it still needs replaced. These liberty's do funny stuff when the battery is low or dead.

Yeah, I just thought I should jump it to be sure it's the battery. I sure hope you guys are because I was bracing for an expensive trip to a mechanic. Thanks so much for the responses.

Girlfriend's Acura did this last week. If the voltage is too low on the battery, the electrical will start doing funny things. Her car had the whole dash dim as well when you tried to start. Battery voltage was 11.5V. Replaced it with new one....all is good.

with new vehicles - the battery has to have enough voltage to turn on the computer.
even if it has reserve current left - if it's at 11.99 v and the computer wants 12.0 - it's not going to start.

Got a new Diehard Platinum today for $200. I'll install it tomorrow morning and should be back on the road! Thanks for replying.

That's the way to go... I bought one after the 2nd Optima died in four years.

Sears Platnium P1 and be done with it these computers in Jeep CRDs don't really enjoy lowered operating voltages.
