My pan had a leak at the back too (I think this is common) so when I changed the trany oil I noticed that area at the back of the trany was very difficult to keep clean. Every time I wiped it more fluid ran down making it difficult to ensure I had a good clean surface for the RTV (gasket maker) to adhere to. After seeing this I would expect that many of these tranys end up leaking there after an oil change.
Also, when I got the parts for the oil change from a Jeep dealer I learned that the manufacture does not use a gasket, they use a special RTV called ATF-RTV that you can get from mopar. It was only $7-8 for a tube big enough to do atleast 2 trany pans. Apparently this RTV is specially formulated so that is is compatible with the ATF.

I have changed my trans fluid and filters 3 times in 144k and have used the pan gasket that came with the filters from Nappa and if the bolts are torqued correctly when reinstalling the pan it will not leak, I always do it by hand and never use an air ratchet, that is a good way to crush the gasket and cause a leak. Just my opinion
Do you remember what the torque should be on the pan bolts? I was having trouble find this. Also, what type of gasket does the Nappa filter come with, is it the cork type? I guess if you used a gasket instead of RTV then having a clean dry surface would not be as critical for leak prevention.
