A couple of weeks ago I heard a scary noise while go over some huge mogels at an ORV park. Right about when my rear axle was completely extended on one side (and stuffed on the other) I heard a scary ratcheting noise when I tried to continue forward. I wheeled pretty hard after that and the noise did not come back. Everything has seemed fine ever since. Any ideas on what that might be?

I think I have a video of it at home I can upload if anyone feels like diagnosing...

Your wheel was stuffed. Could it be the noise of the tire rubbing against the wheel well? I've scratched the paint off of that area and so have others .... When my front tires rub the front air dam, it sounded pretty nasty, too.

Was the (left) driver side rear wheel stuffed? Mine if pretty loud on that side as well. It rubs on the 'bubble' for the fuel filler neck. Take a look in the wheel well and see if it is marked.

Later,
J

I hear it all the time when I'm fully flexed in back. Figured its just everything stretching out. Springs.

Here it is

It is only about 1/2 meg so it should be a quick download. The sound is very noticeable in the video. Wasn't near that loud in reality/person...

I'm definitely no expert but it sounds like your tire(s) rubbing against something.

I agree, sounds like the tire rubbing the other fender well

Were you in 4wd? 4 lo?

It is similar to what I have heard in the past but I noticed that your front left tire was not moving. Hmmmm... Was the front right spinning?

Yeah, the front right was spinning. I was in 4High. I can't figure out what it was. Shortly after that I went down a pretty wicked trail with no problems.

Yeah, then I am going to say tire on the plastic inner fender.

My track-lock never made a sound like that.

Later,
J

Might even be the tread of that left rear tire slapping against something beneath it as it spins.

Well, while you guys are saying it COULD be the tire rubbing the inside, the only thing to do is go LOOK up in the well area and see if there are scratches.

Do says I. Talk, do not.

Wise this counsel is. Check the well area you must.

Well, I can't find any tell-tale marks in the wells. I guess I won't figure this one until it happens again or somethine breaks :)

I've heard this a number of times when one side is stuffed really hard. I think its coming from the axle or the diff. This one sounds similar, but the wheels are not spinning as quickly so its slower sounding....http://ca.geocities.com/itsajeepthing@rogers.com/don_at_tipover.wmv

edit:

p.s. this is not my video - its one of the many that the good folks here make available for everyone to see 8) I think it was filmed last year at Moab?
