I have been working on my jeep for the past few days. I replaced turbo hoses, cleaned the engine and a few other odds and ends. Once Finished, I got in the jeep for a test run. I went to put the windows down, but got nothing. I checked every single fuse in the cab and under the hood. All look good. What am I missing? Has anyone dealt with this before? I can't find any other threads on power windows.

Thanks for you help,

Daniel, Volcano Hawaii

I know you said the fuses look good but unless you pulled the applicable fuse and checked for continuity looks can be deceiving. The in cab fuse in cavity 1 is the one you need to check. As a quick check does your horn work? If not that fuse is gone as it covers the horn, sunroof, and window relays and is the only item that I can see whose failure would disable both windows and the sunroof at the same time. Beyond that I cannot help much. There are some diagnostic suggestions in the factory service manual. If you don't have a copy check the link in Sam's Noob Guide sticky at the top of the forum.

Yes, I went through all the simple stuff already. Thanks for reminding me about the service manual, i'll check it out.

In the mean time, anyone else had this problem before?

Did you move/disconnect any grounds in your work? An unreliable ground would result in some of those problems (and you wouldn't see it in the fuse panel).

Update:

I remember what happened....

I was using a pocket inverter in the cigar lighter power outlet in the front just previous to my working on the engine. Then the inverter fried and the windows quit at that point, funny thing is the 12v outlet still works...

There is a junction block that has power window and sunroof relays. I suppose it's possible that both relays got fried. Unfortunately while I can find references in both the parts and FSM I cannot quite figure out the location of the junction block. It's different from the in cab fuses and the power distribution center that's just in front of the battery.

The fuses are part of the JB. the relays are on the back side. there is a panel just under the steering wheel that if you give a good pull you will find that it hinges down exposing the back end of the junction block. My junction block is different from the one pictured in the shop manual. I tried switching all the relays around with one that I know works and that didn't work. So I'm back to the drawing board. Im going to test the window master switch next. I just don't have my tester with me, so it will have to wait.

Mahalo for your help. I really appreciate it!

For future reference I did a little dissection of the junction block in this thread:

I think the problem is in either the body control module or the power window switch. I hope it's not some wire buried deep in the harness somewhere...or worse.

Any body ever changed a body controller before?

Thanks

Ya the BCM is a bit of a pita to get too, but you can have it out in 30-40mins your first time.

Still now windows, wondering if there is any new ideas out there. Body Control Module is looking like the guilty party, but i dont want to rule something else out just yet.

Dealer says BCM. We'll see if it fixes it.

Did replacing the BCM fix the issue? Just wondering since my windows stopped working as well. I was rolling up my windows tonight and the switches just stopped working. The window switches still light up, but when I push them, the lights cut out for a couple seconds. I got two windows fully closed but the other two are still open. My horn still works so I doubt it is the cab fuse in cavity 1 since that covers the horn, window relays, and sunroof (which my KJ does not have). Thanks in advance for the help!

Best is to download the KJ Service Manual for your year KJ from the link mentioned above.
Then follow the explaination of of how the windows work and then pull out your Multi-meter and with the aid of the included circuit diagrams do some measuring of voltages and check the grounds at the same time.....usual suspect is the board that has the window switches mounted on it. Using the circuit diagrams Index you will find the location of the "Power Window Relay" which is on the rear end of the internal fuse panel (Junction Block)....you can try swapping that relay out with an identical one next to it!

BCM is about the last thing I would think of replacing....possible that it has failed but definitely last on my list. :?

BCM Controls everything comfort/safety related. The problem with my kj was the bcm. Which was caused by my optima battery having a small hole poked in the top of it. Replaced three bcms before battery was replaced and problem solved.
