I had a couple questions pertaining to a couple mods that are up and coming, specifically the lift pump and EHM/Provent mod.

First, is there much difference between the Raptor and kennedy diesel lift pumps, besides the price? I was told by my mechanic to stay away from the Walbro FRB-5 that someone had suggested, and go with a Raptor, but he had never heard of kennedy diesel.

Second, does the EHM mod throw a CEL, or will it just not pass emissions? As I understand it, a Provent mod will avoid this issue, correct? On that note, is Racor or Provent preferred? Does anyone have experience with the PICOFLEX?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I cannot speak to the EHM or the Provent as I have the Green Diesel EcoTune and don't really feel I need either. As to the difference between the pumps; as nearly as I can tell the Raptor is a adjustable flow pump and the Kennedy is fixed flow rate. Given the fuel demands and the fuel valving system on the CRD we need a much lower flow rate than a big rig engine. The Kennedy mets that need as is. The Raptor might, I cannot tell, be adjustable enough to also do so too but to be sure you would have to also install a fuel line pressure gauge at an added cost. IMHO just use the Kennedy. Install instructions are at http://liberty.eurekaboy.com/kennedy.htm or at various places on this forum.

The GDE EcoTune reduces the EGR and shuts off the CEL as GDE states in their Literature. Provent, another Oil Separator removes the oil vapors from the crank case ventilation fumes (called Blow By) that get sucked into the turbo, sent through the inter cooler (what does not settle out) and into the intake. When the oil mist hits the EGR exhaust going into the intake, it turns into a carbon oil goo mess and clogges up the intake. When the carbon oil goo builds up enough it blocks off/reduces the air flow into engine any reduces performance. Reducing the EGR will reduce the carbon oil goo but not eliminate the problem, it will just take longer to gunk up the manifold.
EHM dumps the Blow By consisting of crankcase fumes/oil mist into the atmosphere where the oil mist settles on what ever it hits and the rest dilutes its' self. Some people with sensitive noses smell the fumes and oil mist. Also the oil that comes out with the Blow By will dribble onto the drive way and like a dog, mark the territory.

Getting rid of the EGR with a plate and using a way to keep the oil mist out of the intake is what is best for the engine performance and longevity. With the current legislation and regulations cooked up by the CARB & EPA along with their Cronies, eliminating the EGR is not Politically Correct.

Manufacturers are working on other ways such as dynamic valve timing to have EGR that does not go into the intake and form the carbon oil goo that cloggs up the intake. Another trick being used is Urea sold as Diesel Exhaust Fluid. I am waiting for someone to sell a system to remove the salt and minerals from piss to make it into DEF, it would be a great way to recycle beer and reduce the nitrate loads at waste water treatment plants.

Thank you for the reply papaindigo. I also have the GDE Eco-Tune. Thanks for reconfirming the kennedy lift pump.

Does this mean it only fails emissions if they smell the oil and fumes? How bad are these fumes/noticeable smoke? Also, no CEL then?

Most of the people who run the emissions tests can't get jobs as Automotive Technicians or even TSA agents. I suspect if they are trained to look for the EHM hose, you will be in trouble. As stupid as some (not all) of the ones I had to put up with if they saw the blow by coming out of the EHM hose, they would call the fire department.

Search for UFO's posts and he has some tricks that have helped him fly through the emissions tests.
In Illinois where I live when I get home, former Governor Blagoyavitch could not line his pockets with the emissions testing stations (for cars and light trucks) and they diverted funds from the other votes he could buy, so they were shut down a few years ago.
The Provent has had some problems freezing up in very cold weather like they get in Canada. My oil separator I built that is next to the radiator tank has not had a problem freezing up. To get the oil back into the pan, I ran a line and "T" ed it into where my centrifuge returns the oil to the pan.

You need the EHM or equivalent because of thepreviously noted reasons AND because the CCV system pressurizes the crankcase robbing HP and ultimately blowing the rear main seal.

EHM takes literally 5 minutes to return to OEM spec. Provent, etc takes much longer. That's why I prefer EHM because I insist on completely stock spec before dealer visits or emissions testing.

Yup, EHM is real easy to undo for testing. Provent not as easy, but its also less likely to be objected to.

I haven't had a warranty since day one, and I suspect most of us are out of our warranty period by now......hmm I sense a new poll coming on.

Emissions folks won't blink at a Provent - it's legal
(and Ford dealer installed them on diesels)

EHM's aren't legal

of course in Texas - if it doesn't have a CEL - it's not an issue
