first it depends where you live so you will want to post your location. then i would google search for laws in your area. then i would ask your local police or highway cops or vehicle registration office.

for example here is what my laws are.

you should be able to search out a similar page for your area.

When we picked up our '06 Renegade with a light bar, the dealer told us that it is illegal to drive with the covers off the light bar lights.
Not that we can't use them, but that we actually have to keep them covered up. Does anyone know if this is true? We are in Calgary, AB.

read my link above, it is for alberta.

yes it is illegal to have the covers off the lights - if you have the covers off, they are illegal whether they are turned on or not. off-road is the only time you may use them or on private property. hrm, might be able to use them on a mall crawl since the parking lots are private property :D

Ouch, I had no idea it was that high. :x Interesting to note that "off-road" lights are defined here as any auxilliary light above the level of the headlights. That wouldn't include clearance lights. You can have a spot light, though, and don't have to keep it covered. (One of those swivel units) By the way here's a cool link: http://www.golight.com/products/golight.html

Interesting that I got my Renegade from a dealer in Calgary and didn't get the covers with it. I was driving around for months without them. The only reason I got them was for protection. I've got a hole in one from a rock kicked up on Deerfoot. :)

BTW Snowsport - there's also a new fine here for passing an emergency vehicle or tow truck stopped with it's lights flashing. I can't remember what the amount is but it's big. You have to slow to 60km or less in the adjacent lane.

Edit: It's up to $700.
