I took a look at a couple of KJ's ('03 & '06) with a 3.7 and manual trans. What kind of real world MPG numbers can be seen with this combo?

Thanks,
Dave

3.7l 5pd manual

245/75/R16 - ARB Front Bumper - 3" lift - about 200lbs of gear in the back.

After doing my km to mile and L to G conversions, mine works out to 18mpg average. However I don't exactly drive in a manner that is..... say, fuel efficient.

I average about 16mpg. Probably all of the extra weight I add just by sitting in it!

Currently stock with custom pvc cai running to the air box but not a k/n filter yet. I managed to get 18 mph with a light foot to and from work over half being highway. Normally 14 - 16 city depending on how heavy my foot is. Interstate driving is about 17-21 depending on cruising speed. 17 when averaging 78 mph on hilly / mountainous terrain.

I'm surprised these numbers are so low :?

I get 19-25 hwy in my auto depending on speed and whether there are hills. City is 13-18 obviously depends a lot on how i'm driving. Fully stock 3.7L 4x4. But shouldn't a manual do better?

Stock 3.7 with a 6 speed manual. I average 17mpg U.S. (21 mpg Canadian). I did not buy the Jeep for the great fuel economy, I bought it because I wanted one vehicle that I could use for both work and play, and it is the perfect vehicle for that.

If you drive a manual transmission like it is supposed to be driven, then you get better fuel economy than an automatic transmission. But manuals are just too much fun to drive normally. :D

pre-lift with factory tires I'd get 20-21 average.

frankenlifted with 245/75/16 BFG TA KO's on soft 8's - I'd get 16.5- 17.5 driving in North Dakota where the max speed limit is 75mph. Now that I'm living in Wisconsin again, where the max speed limit is 65mph, I was get 18-19 mpg. I actually got 19.98 out of the last tank.

Note, I also adjust my mileage for the increased tire circumference. it works out to (miles on spedo x 1.05555), or for every 18 miles my spedometer says, I've actually driven 19 miles.

Also, I just thought that I'd mention, although I'm sure others will interject their thoughts ... if you are really concerned about gas mileage, and are a die hard manual driver/jeep lover, my lady bought an '08 patriot 4wd with the five speed manual. She's gotten 28 mpg out of some tanks, and it's never been below 25mpg.

I get about 15mpg.
I drive about 50/50 city/highway.
Anything over 65mph I'm just wasting fuel.

Funny you should write this. There are two ways I can take to go home from one of the places where I do a lot of work. One way is the freeway, which is a little shorter and fairly level, where the speeds are 70+ mph and the other way is back roads where there are several lights and hills and the average speed is 40 to 50 mph. The back roads are a little longer, but I get better mileage even with all the lights, hills and extra traffic. As long as I keep under 65 mph I get decent (for a Jeep) mileage, anything over 65 and my mileage noticably suffers.

Another thing I have noticed is that my city and highway mileage numbers are very close to each other. My mother has a Jeep with an automatic and her city mileage is noticably worse than mine. I guess with the low end torque combined with the gearing (3.55) for the manuals, they do not have to work too hard in the city.

I have a completly stock 05 3.7 with the 6 speed. I get about 15-17 city 19-21 combined and 24-26 all highway doing the speed limit and shifting out between 2-3.5k depending on how I need to drive. BTW I only have 29k miles on mine so if your looking at vehicles above 75k you should expect them to do a little less because of wear. I also never do more than 5 over and everyone beats me at red lights because I drive conciously overlooking the MPG. I'm a broke college student and drive almost 100 miles a day os every mile I can sqeeze out of a gallon is very important. Combined driving I get 360 miles untill I am at the last 8th of a tank and I get about 400 all highways at the same point which is between 16-17 gallons used. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the input! I sold my CRD about a year ago to eliminate a monthly payment. Then, I took the equity and bought a PT Cruiser. The problem is that it's a bit small for me. I need to get back into a Liberty as long as I feel that I can acheive approximately the same MPG's. I only get about 20 MPG (PT) for mostly suburban driving, so it almost seems possible.

Thanks again,
Dave

The gasser libbys get good milage for a medium sized SUV. The standard tranny really helps. I can't do better than 17 MPG with my GF's 04 renny 3.7 auto. The stick is the way to go. PT's have really bad reasale so I wish you luck on getting that thing turned back to a libby. BTW my 98 Wrangler 2.5|4 5-Speed with 31" tires and 2" Lift and 120k miles got 21mpg highway/16ish city. My 3.7 bigger, heavier, newer jeep I would never trade and go back to my old wrangler. There is just something about jeeps, you can leave for now, but you will always come back!

My '03 Renny 5-Speed is bone stock and I average 18-19mpg during the spring/summer. My best mileage being 21.8 on a 3 hour trip back from the Adirondacks. averaging about 70 MPH. During the winter I'll average about 16.2mpg. It really takes a hit between the "winter gas", idling to let it warm up and the driving conditions in and out of 4x4.

You manual transmission guys have all the fun. It sucks that Jeep took it out of the Liberty before I was able to get mine :(
