I was under the liberty a few days ago and noticed that there was quite a bit of rust on the tranny pan.
No scratches or any type of damage to the pan.
I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed any on theirs?

I'm thinking of calling the dealer to see about getting it replaced under warranty due to defective materials.
Think I have a shot? Either under the power train warranty or extended bumper to bumper?

Oh yeah, it's a '09 Sport.

thanks.

Good luck with that.

A new pan for a 42RLE is like $12,replace it and add new ATF+4,then actually wash your undercarriage at least once a month if not sooner to keep the rust in check since you live in a high salt use area.Rust formed from salt is not covered under any warranty.

But, the warranty seems to be a lot different for ball joints if you live in a highly salted place.

The "good luck with that" made me laugh out loud when I open this up :D

I figure what do I have to lose by having them look and try to get it under warranty. I need an inspection anyway.
I understand about rust and salt, and do rinse the undercarriage (I admit not religiously) but it's under 2 years old and the rest of the undercarriage looks ok. Oil pan is spotless. Something just doesn't seem right.

I had a good experience with the dealer I'm going to when I needed warranty work once before so we'll see. Going by tomorrow morning.

My only concern about doing it myself is not having a dipstick for measuring the fluid once I refill. I guess I can measure what comes out and refill with the same amount. I've done that before but had a stick to double check it with.

Here's a few pics of the pan and one of the oil pan for comparison.

Apples to oranges comparison.

To the OP the reason the trans pan is like that is it get's back spray from the front tires when you turn, something your engine oil pan does not get.Just replace the pan and get a skid plate over it which will help and was the middle of the undercarriage better in the winter(at least once every 2 weeks). The corrosion warranty only covers the body panels, and that is very limited.Read the warranty manual and it will state what is covered and what is not.Should run under $100(close to) to have it replaced.

Thanks. Only reason I will try for warranty is due to the wording "defective materials". Any vehicle I have ever owned never had pan rust like that especially after only 2 years. The last vehicle i got rid of, a chrysler product, was 23 years old and didn't have spot of rust on either pan.

I see what your saying about it getting spray, but doesn't everything under there? Maybe everything doesn't get as direct a spray but i would think if it's a spray and salt issue something else would be showing signs of rust too no? I don't expect to get it done for free but it sure can't hurt to talk to them about it.

I need an inspection anyway so what the hell.

Thanks again tjkj2002.

I see your point for warranty.

I see TJ point as well, it is $12....

Now, what about finding a non steal pan, so it would not rust and could hold more and cool more???

Just a silly idea...
