Found oil on driver side rear axel housing, shock, shock mount and vicinity. Rancho RSX 17004 shocks have been on about two years or so now.
Took it to the dealer because I thought an axel seal was leaking. Couldn't be a shock. Rancho RSX 17004 are gas (nitrogen) filled and I hadn't noticed a ride or handling difference. By the way, brake fluid level was good.
As soon as the mechanic got it on the lift, he diagnosed the shock as bad. Said if it was an axel seal leak, there would be heavier oil / grease present. By the way, the dealer did not charge me one cent for diagnostics (normally 75 bucks). Of course, the visit wasn't documented and I had some concern about that. I still wasn't convinced the shock was faulty.
No one in Jacksonville FL has the 17004 on the shelf and even if they did, they would not have had the correct bushing. I could have recycled the old bushings I suppose.
Ordered shocks from All J Products. Turned around and they were at my door. Awesome service and delivery!!! Thanks Heather!!!
I still didn't 100% believe the shock was bad until today when I removed the shock on the diver side and found I could freely move the rod in and out. Wow! I guess the nitrogen filled gas shocks do have oil in them.
The passenger side shock was still good, but of course I replaced both.
I've done a search, but can't find any other posts about 17004 failure. Am I the only one?
