After reading up on here about the infinity "premium" sound system a while back i was sort of scared off from replacing the stock speakers, but I'm starting to think the problems I was reading about are only for the KJ.

While removing my drivers door panel, I was surprised today to find that my stock infinity speakers do not have an amp attached to them like the KJ speakers do.

curious about this, i tried to do some additional research based around the part numbers on the speaker, and i looked up the part number from the KK parts list to find a resistance rating, but I could not verify whether the speakers were 2 ohm or 4 ohm.

After this I decided to call crutchfield about it. They acted like it was no big deal to replace the KK speakers, whether they were 2 ohm or not. The guy mentioned that the volume may go down b/c I'd be getting less power, but since I have an aftermarket head unit (which I've never been able to go full power on anyway) the volume should be fine, and the speakers will not be damaged.

Has anyone done a plain and simple speaker swap on their KK? Have you had any problems since the swap?

Thanks!

Maybe some research on it will tell you the info you need.

Changes are they are 4 ohm. It's pretty standard unless you get into the really high end sounds systems like Bang & Olufsen.

On a similar note: How does the amp for the stock sub receive line in signal from HU? Is is a seperate RCA line or does it use rear speaker signal but just runs it thru a Low pass filter?

it would be nice if we could get a central resource goin that lists all of the major differences between KK and KJ for popular modifications. It gets confusing sometimes searching through pages of mixed KK and KJ setups.

I'll get some new 4 ohm speakers and see how it goes.

I'm quite surprized to see that people are changing out the Infinity system. I've upgraded stereo systems in nearly every car I've had. With the exception of an Acura I had w/a Bose system. Then only thing I even did to that was add a small sub. I've always thought the Infinity system in my KK was pretty good all around. I do have the nav system, not sure if that makes a difference or not but even a year later and I still can't find a reason to upgrade it. (maybe take stock in Dynamat but thats about it! )

Did you have have the factory nav system, black and blue?

No. I specifically didnt get the NAV b/c 1. I knew I wanted to get an aftermarket HU, and my buddy has a commander with the NAV and I wasnt very impressed... and 2. I pride myself on my natural navigation abilities lol. plus I like to pave my own path when going new places

edit: and the commander has the boston acoustic premium sound system I think... The bass sounds like a fart compared to my sub. overall poor sound quality at high volume levels

also, I get some terrible rattling from my passenger rear door speaker with high bass songs, and I'd rather upgrade than repair the crap paper cone

i did the swap.

pulled my head unit and reversed the wiring to the standard wiring, unplugged the tweeters, and today i finally directly connected the front two speakers to the head unit. the last couple days i've gone with no treble up front as I poked around and contemplated running wires thru the door.

decided to dig through the bundles of wires and splice them in the foot well so i wouldnt have to deal with the window. i did the passenger side first to build some confidence as it was way easier to find and splice. tested the speaker and it sounded awesome.

then i did the drivers door. had to unclip the gray harness to get more room to pull the bundle of wires out that headed out to the door. removed the tape, shuffled through the bundle to find the right wires, spliced, taped, and put the trim back on.

i thought it was going to be a lot tougher. the first, more easily accessible bundle of wires i searched through had 2 sets that where the same color as the front left speaker. I assume one set goes back to the amp from the HU, and one set returns to the speaker. didnt want to risk guessing, so i went with the door bundle instead. besides getting good light on the wires and contorting my body for a while, it wasn't too bad.
