What kind of intakes are you all running? (air intake not manifold) I had run ebay ones on old Mustangs with luck....but the prices seam to be getting higher.

those of you that made one....what materials did you use? pics and specs?

Im freshening up the wifes KJ this summer too and before I drop $ on a filter I thought Id see what type of intake I can get for the same $. I can get a new K&N drop in for $39.00
Most all of those are cheap worthless piles of junk even if they charge 50 or 250 for them.
Amsoil ( or good paper ) filter in the stock box, 3 to 4 inch hose to the grill area directly into the box and be done
perhaps this is a good answer?

You already answered your questions. Get a Amsoil filter and get up with LongTallTexan (IIRC) for his intake setup. Or you could build your own but his allows for a much cleaner install.

Im running a K and N FIPK series 57 with custom ram air and love it! Worth the $200 to my door, but dont expect huge numbers from it.

I ran the K&N FIPK for about 70,000 miles, then went back to the original airbox with an Amsoil filter. My mileage went up 1-2 miles per gallon depending on season and there was no noticeable decrease in performance. Food for thought. You really can't make the intakes any more efficient than they are from the factory because they're designed to work with the engine to attain the best possible gas mileage. Subsequently, you're going to get pretty much the best performance out of it as well, barring any major changes to the internal components of the engine.

Or a higher flowing exhaust or higher flowing throttle body or more fuel/tuning. The K and N intake wont make much gains as the only mod, but it compliments my mods well and certainly increased throttle response and without a lead foot better average fuel economy. The engine also feels peppier with the combo of mods and Im sure will help with future engine mods.
