LOL, what are you broke from all of your $$$ purchases.. j/k

No, but really, I'm living vicariously through you, sooooo.... the 241OR has the 4:1, and if you got a used one maybe you could score an awesome deal (car-parts.com??) but I think $1800 is about the price you would pay (from my research) so an atlas isn't TOO much more. If it were me, I'd do the np241OR because it's still JEEP parts, 1 ton rated, easy installation (I really like using stock shifter, even if it's reversed)

They are pretty rare to find used and range from $800-$1500 from what I have seen, new they run about $2400.The Atlas would be a much better choice, then again I'm a little biased on that subject  .

I would be,they want a arm and a leg here for a used one and being sold as "Works but has funny noise from it,it's a steal for $1500" or "Works but slips out of gear sometimes,a steal at $1200".

No more stupid chains for me

Since i broke the bank getting what i've got now, for the moment a new transfer case is purely hypothetical. Nonetheless, i want to start thinking about it. I'd like to know more about the atlas. Although i want to be able to handle obstacles like the one she broke on, this is also a daily driver and road trip vehicle, so whatever i gain offroad I don't want to lose any on-road capability or comfort. So far, the new suspension has greatly improved both on and off road handling. The tires are louder, but tolerable. I would not think that a transfer case change would hurt on-road performance, would it?

BTW, here is what appears to be the 241or option, new.

A couple of follow up things.

First, i am wishing that i had gone with 4.88 gears rather than 4.56. My speedometer reads about 12% slower than gps speed says, and i really did not need any more high-end since it would easily go 90-100 mph stock without too many rpm's.

Also, although engine temp is fine ( straight up or just slightly left) most of the time, i am experiencing rapid overheating on steep mountain grades at highway speeds. I figure it must be a thermostat and have been reading with great interest about the inline modification.

After transfer case repair i think i am getting some noise, but hard to tell if tires, road noise from wheel well chopping, or whatever. Power seems good, but mpg on highway trip through utah has only been around 19 mpg. I am wondering if i might be getting a little extra drive train drag and if break-in of new gears will reduce friction and improve mpg.

Test to make sure your fan clutch is engaging - many have problems (mine's never engaged) - you should be able to hear the sound (there's also a test)

http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=575149#p575149

there's a Hayden aftermarket - that engages at 170 air temp instead of the 200 air temp of the stock - it's helped a number of folks (it's on my list - but I've only gotten past mid gauge climbing mountains)

(or you can scroll to the first of the fan thread - and try Kap's Fixed Fan Mod

DIdn't think they had 4.88 in the rear for the 8.25, and did you get a GDE Transmission tune yet?

*Also, have you opened up your exhaust? The flange after the cat restricts some, can raise the EGT a little. So with your tires, HOT tune, and Summer HIll driving you'd want to to all you can for heat :)

Do you know if you have the re calibrated temp gauge, and have you experienced the A/C cutting off and warning chimes (as talked about in the overheating thread?)

I might be lucky, but I have yet to see my temp go past halfway, except after the initial inline t-stat.

I have not done the GDE transmission tune yet. Also, although i have the GDE hot tune, i did not notice until after i left home that the shop must have disabled the tune somehoe (battery disconnected perhaps?). Therefore, when i get home and reinstall the hot tune i will be curious to see if it makes the temp issue better or worse. I do miss the added power.

I have also not done anything yet to open up the exhaust. Any suggestions on exhaust?

I believe superior makes a 4.88 ring and pinion and wonder if the slightly higher rpms for the same mph would improve engine efficiency and reduce heat, although transmission has not been shifting down and vehicle has not lost speed even on steep grades.
http://www.superioraxlegear.com/c825488 ... 10605.html

I have not noticed the fan kick on, but i also frwaked out when the temp gauge started climbing like a speeometer - turned off the a/c, slowed down, and even turned the heater on full blast for one long steep grade. I pulled some normal grades today at 70+ mph, transmission stayed in top gear, a/c on, and gauge spiked only to 3/4. Of course ambient temp is only about 80 to 85 F here in mountains - not like the 100+ in southern utah where i live.

I have not changed out the temp gauge. My liberty did come from factory with tow package. Suncoast torque converter and transgo kit installed.

So far, after reading the threads that everyone linked to, i am inclined to first, get an alignment, and second, install the hayden fan.

Uh oh, hope you don't need to send off your ECU for a reflash!

The exhaust is 2.5" EXCEPT at the coupling after the CAT, which it goes to 2.25... Cut it out, and either straight pipe it (it's a little farty, but barely louder) or do a glass pack.

Agreed on doing the alignment and Hayden

The TCM tune will cause it to lock up sooner (Or later if you get the tuning for towing) I'd ask GDE what would be best, you might be better off with the towing one with a lot of hill driving and your tire size??

I do a mod suggest on another forum by Mitch and Ranger1 on my CRD It consist of a Hayden clutch fan (HY2905) and a 11 blades Mopart nylon fan from a Liberty 02 towing option (52079654AE). This mod is amazing! EGT temp take half time now to cold down before engine stop, my clutch fan almost never engage because the nylon fan did such a good job.

The best solution for you is the mod Warp2 have done to is CRD , he use a Magnaglow cat back SS (PART# 15870) but cut the rear portion of the catalyzer and weld a 2.5" SS piece of pipe the result give you a big drop in EGT temp and some extra power.

I suggest your install ASAP a EGT +Trans temp gauge and of course the 11 blades nylon fan with the Hayden clutch. You may thank yourself to have done it . :2cents:

PS: I nice custom made bumber similar to this one may look amazing on your rig...

Thanks for advice oldskull.

When i got the GDE tune i paid a few extra bucks and got the programming module, so i can reload tune at will.

As far as exhaust there are some nay sayers because of liniar flow of exhaust but I found a HUGE improvement in EGT and mild improvement in eng. temp with a 3" downpipe back system that was custom made by a shop here in Denver for me and at a price of 300$ id say thats the best deal around. If your willing to go on a little road trip go to BDM in Denver and tell em I sent you and theyll extend you my price for it ( youll have to remind them Im the Diesel Jeep Kile not the hotrod Kyle). The Hot tune has caused fuel starvation under load in some guys Jeeps and that can cause some issues too especially when driving at an angle when the fuel level is low, a lift pump may be needed.

oh my god. DO WANT. i seriously am in love with your rig, just needs a front bumper IMO. but i would LOVE for my CRD to get to that level. Now i have no fears of putting a clevis lift in the front of mine for some extra boost, may even cut my fenders like you did since i really like the flat fender look.
