Turned the jeep over after work, put it in reverse...stalled. started back up...for a minute, and the engine started to run very hard...basically knocking and missing.

Turned it off and back on...it ran fine the drive home.

thoughts?

No lift pump, does this sound like air in fuel?

Might be air in the fuel although my experience with air in the fuel was crank up and almost immediately stall. Might be drain back of tranny fluid due to a bad filter and my experience with that has been crank up, shift into gear, hard stall, recrank and seem to run rough for a short bit.

If air bleed head (pump primer knob, with vinyl tube on it open bleeder screw, repeat until all air gone). If you have to do this cycle several times air was probably your problem. If you have 1st gen fuel head replace (see my post at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=62133&p=687524#p687524). Consider inline or in tank fuel lift pump.

If tranny try crank; idle in neutral at 1,000 rpm for 30 seconds; if problem does not happen again consider tranny service with new filters (WIX tranny service set # 58843.

I've had the tranny symptoms before. It did almost seem as if the tranny was pulling the motor down and the motor didn't recover and started to run very hard.
