VW has the best diesel offerings (at a very reasonable price) in the US. They are on target to sell almost 100,000 TDi Jettas this year. Hybrids are a sick joke compared with one of these. Long term longevity has given VW some issues with the powertrain, nothing new to other manufacturers building diesel to the latest EPA regulations. We will do our best to reduce warranty problems and further improve the fuel economy on the VWs in the coming month/years through tuning.

3.2 TDI is a way better engine. For that fact so is the 4.2TDI but so the US gets screwed again.

I've run a TDI since '02, 46 mpg w/ Upsolute chip. Cleaned the intake manifold twice now at 140K miles.

VW badly misjudged the market big time with the Tour-egg diesel option several years ago. Way over priced for a non-off road SUV. Don't know what they were thinking by going after the Aspen-skiing Beemer crowd on price point.

If they had simplified their diesel SUV to more robust for off-road, scaled back the luxury aspects and aimed the model pricing to be the next segment above the Jetta they would have picked up a lot of TDI owners and would be CRD'ers.

So your thinking about making tunes for VWs? I have a 2010 JSW TDI and will be first in line if you do.

Anyone contemplating the purchase of a 2004-2005 Passat with the BHW diesel should read up on the TDICLUB Forum about the chain-driven balance shaft module and its costly fix. Very few were fixed under warranty. I had to drive from Portland, Oregon to Coconut Creek, Florida to get mine repaired under warranty.

Patric Henry.
I owned a 1999.5 (A4) jetta with an the ALH engine. I drove it 114k miles in 4 years and AVERAGED 49.6 MPG but it was standard shift  My son owns it now and the intake has been cleaned twice. It now has a phase 2 and 3 (switchable) Rocket tune.
My 1996 Passat wagon tdi bought new had 107k miles in 3 years and 1 week. It averaged just over 45 MPG

Wobbly

VW is very arrogant and they never make a mistake. Just ask them. There was a similar situation on Eurovans on a V6 or VR6, don’t remember what one, where the camshaft sprocket located on the rear of the engine was not hardened properly. VW’s attitude was they would fail under warranty so a recall was not needed. But there were a few that made it past the warranty and those owners were screwed.

Whenever possible I buy used cars to avoid the whole dealer/warranty game where things are always stacked against the customer.

I bought a new CRD because there were no used ones and the same for both my 96 Passat TDI and 1999.5 Jetta.

VW makes a pickup truck like a Honda Ridgeline. If they were smart enough to build those at their new plant in Tennesse and put a tdi in it I would buy a new of those too :BINGO:

4.2 FSI aka gasser is us and older models up to 2005 iirc where fuel injected.

4.2 TDI started in ROW (rest of world) in 2005 but not for US.

I have a 2007 V10 TDI Touareg that is a lot of fun.

VW brought in a limited number of these up to 2008, and then went to the 3.0 TDI in the Touareg and Audi Q7.

ROW got the 4.2 TDI in these as well as the Audi A8.

Big VW/ Audi guy so LMK if anyone has any questions

I ended up selling my 05 Passat wagon with 87K on it due to this issue. VOA would not issue a recall on the balance shaft chain drive that was deleted from parts inventorys. The replacement idler gear drive balance shaft was VW's way of saying yup. we F***ed up with the grenading chain drive units but if you are passed 80K, its on you to come up with the 2-3 grand for fixing "our" screw up!!!! Oh ya, I'll by another VW....... they are called 99-03 TDI-ALH VW's....or beaters for short.

Local VW dealers were clueless about the problem. Pete, the Service Manager at Gunther VW in Florida, is on the TDI Forum and knew how serious the problem is. He not only offered to do the work under warranty, but treated us royally, with a free rental car, a personal tour of Gunther's VW Museum, and presents of VW gear.
His staff are outstanding too. They had the work done in one day.

Cool. Old race buddy is PM for the Golf 7 and has a VW Aramok TDI as a company car. I lived in Germany for 13 years and speak it well. I still maintain a house, 2 cars, a wife and a dog there in Germany.

I drive 110 miles to work with 95% being interstate and this is absolutely true.

This pic was taken just a few miles from my house. Western Sizzlin (the Sizzler) is next door, bet they stopped for lunch, and there is a gas station with the cheapest diesel prices on the other side of the exit. Exit, 155 on I-24 FWIW.

For the drive from the factory in Chattanooga to Nashville, we got 40 mpg, close to the promised 43.

Monteagle mountain probably hurt their numbers, it's long and steep. Around Chattanooga isn't so flat and level either. I usually get a few MPG's less than advertised even if hyper-mileing due to the terrain.
