I want a wider stance for my Jeep KJ but cannot decide if I should use 1" spacers or a deeper dish wheel .
I thought the Rubicon wheels were backspaced more than the KJ wheels, but when I look up replacements
on most sites it gives the same backspacing and offset for the KJ aand Rubicon wheels . I thought the Rubicon wheels
were a full inch wider per wheel?? Can someone with experience tell me what offset will give me the wider stance, or should I just use the spacers( cheaper) and forget about it .

Thanks, Robert

For some reason alot of people do not like spacers? Dont really know why. One problem with wider rims/ spacers is it puts more pressure on an already failing balljoint. The rubi rims should have at least .5 less backspacing, I think thats how it goes. Thus giving you 1in more width over-all.

The rubi rims are DEFINITELY spaced out farther. I can tell just by looking at my Jeep, and expecially by the way the spare hangs on the tire carrier on the back.

I have a set of spacers I use with my stock rims for the street. They work fine and they look great even with stock tires, but they are a pain in the butt when swapping to my offroad tires.

I also have a set of moab rims that I use offroad.

My Moab rim back spacing is 5"
My Stock renegade rims are 5.5"

I have heard some moab rims have different backspacing, so I am going off the set I have.

Either way you go it will look good.

But the best and safest way to go would be with new rims -5" backspacing. Steelies if you plan to wheel.

I am pretty sure the Moabs are also 16x8 instead of the KJ's 16x7.

Yes, they are 16x8, and mine also have 5" backspacing. The edge of the tire if even with the edge of the flare with my MOAB's and MTR's

If I have figured right, the outside of the rim would sit 1.5" farther out than stock due to the wider rim and less backspacing.

Does your KJ have a lift kit with the Rubicon wheels . I think rubbing would be expected without a lift or larger tire diameter .

Now I think I know why I am confused . Backspacing is measured from the inside of the wheel ( brake side) whereas
offset is the distance from centerline . I was thinking backspacing was from the outside in . AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH !!
Your little diagram helped to clarify..................Thank You !

I had spacers with my stock wheels and it was fine. When I got my Mickey Thompson Classic Locks I had to take them off. The first turn I took I ripped the fender flare off. Now I just run the mickey's with no spacers. My other set is now a set of Moabs with the MTR's, also no spacers used. I guess what I am saying is the spacers work well with the stock liberty rims.
