Sam, with all your experience with sad CRD engines, what do you think might be going on with this one besides a possible air issue? Is there something else that would cause that #3 code in your knowledgebase?

Geordi I really hesitate to speculate on this one. (With no offense to ckhenshaw4) We haven't gotten a full background info......we don't even know the code numbers that were pulled.

Massive air leak....ok maybe, timing off, probably not, bad injector, possible, bad glow plug possible. Basically without knowing more I think its a pretty big crapshoot, so you need to talk into it thinking its the worst(engine) and be happy if its less. Since you cannot count on it being fixable the cost of replacing an engine needs to factor into the equation.

No offense taken at all Sir Sam. I am VERY new to the Jeep Diesels. I have always run Volkswagen Diesels, and know them inside and out. I do all my own repairs on them, and could tell you just about anything with them. My only experience so far with Jeep Diesels is my wifes GC with the 3.0L Mercedes Diesel. A friend of mine from Wayland, Chrysler, Jeep is the one that went with me to look at it, and he said that without looking into it further, he could really not tell me a whole lot. He is an EXCELLENT diesel machanic, and said that it could be something very easy, and then again, maybe not.
I am very excited about getting a Liberty Diesel, but don't want to do anything stupid either. Thanks for all the advice, and keep it coming.

Long block only? With core? The only part number I have for an engine comes back at a shop price of $11,000, so ya, please post the part number.

Good to know that they can be had for a decent price! Where did you order it from? I was thinking of pushing it into a river if I ever lost the (knock on wood) engine, but this ($3500) makes me reconsider!

Well folks, the Liberty at auction went for $8,016.00. :5SHOTS: I hope you all did not pass out. As you can guess, I am still on the lookout to buy a Liberty Diesel.
Again, I want to thank everyone on this forum for all of your help, and keep it coming.

Wow... 8k with an unknown motor? Even I'm not that nuts. There are GOOD RUNNING examples that sell for about that much these days, and some that are asking WAY more. Who knows if they get it, but they are asking.

What did this come with? Injectors, glow plugs, egr valve, turbo? (I know, wishfull thinking).

I just picked up a basket case 2005 Sport CRD and it needs a motor.

Sounds like you got the steal of the century or your dealer messed up.

List price is $7335 plus a $3500 core charge.
So even with a great discount of say 25% that would make the engine $5501 + $3500 core

No wonder the used ones at junk yards are so much.

My Parts Fiche lists the Complete Engine part number as: 53034076AA, but that doesn't come up as an entire engine when I plug it into a Mopar Parts ordering system.

Correct I "think" the R that replaces the 5 means rebuilt or remanufactured.

I called two dealers today and both said that the 53 number as replaced with the R3 number which is a reman motor.

But delivery was 3-5 days. :D
