So I come out this morning (in my driveway), open the driver's door, and.... glass all over the place. My passenger door window is shattered and every conceivable surface is covered with glass. My GPS and my laptop (of course, the one night I leave it in the Jeep) are missing. The brick they used is still laying in the passenger foot well. If that isn't enough, when the police come it turns out 2 other cars on the street were gone into. Of course, they were older cars and may or may not have been left unlocked. Nothing missing but paper rifled through. One guy's driver's license and SS card were missing. (old guy, he swears he locked it but his door wasn't damaged)

After the cops left, the insurance guy came over to the house to appraise it. While we were looking it over we noticed the tear in the passenger (leather) seat where the brick hit it. Also, it looks like they tried to smash in the rear window first as it had 4 big gouges and brick debri on the glass. Also the strip on the inside that seperates the glass from the smaller panel of glass (stationary window) is all deformed. The cops think the hit the rear window so hard that it flexed and damaged the channel but didn't shatter! When it didn't shatter they must have stood back and really hauled the brick at the front window for it to go through and do so much damage to the seat. Also put a gouge in my inner door panel near where the lock button is (leather of course) Unless they tried to pry it open with something and tore it then.

First estimate from Mr. Insurance man is $2500+!! $500 deductable and the Laptop & GPS aren't covered (something about having to be permanently mounted)!!

I just spent over 3 hours vacuuming up glass and cleaning everything out of the inside. Man, I had more crap in there then I realized! It must be 200lbs lighter now. Got a piece of cardboard for a window tonight and an appointment in the morning at the glass place. Luckily there is no deductable on my glass. Just on the other damage. By the time I am done with the deductible, replacement laptop and GPS, this is gonna cost me like $2K out of pocket.

Don't ask for pics. I was too upset to take any (though I thought about it!) Oh, yeah, they left my digital camera in the cup holder! Guess they didn't see it in the black case.
I'll see if I can get copies of the insurance guy's pics.

Check your homeowners' policy, it may cover your GPS & Laptop.

Some people just have no respect for other people's stuff. That is why I refuse to leave my jeep or bike out of the garage when I'm not watching them.

It sucks having your vehicle messed with. I had a truck stolen when I was in high school and I felt really voilated. Luckily I had full coverage and I got more than I though it was worth. Good luck and yeah, try the homeowners insurance, they might cover the GPS and Laptop.

Was the GPS plugged in to the power outlet? Some policies say Electrically connected not permenantly connected. Mine does and I had a cell phone replaced that was plugged in to the power outlet charging when my truck was broken into.

 Man that sucks! I was going to mention the same thing about the homeowners insurance Maybe covering your laptop and GPS.
I think I will go Alarm shopping this weekend. I know a laptop wouldn't last overnight in any car in my town. This place is going downhill fast. :x
Hope they leave your KJ alone after you get it fixed up.

Oh yeah, I forgot - Get this one, While I'm in the yard w/the police and the insurance guy, the local radio station calls to say I have won "Workplace of the Week" with a pizza party from an application I put in in January. I kid you not!! I was like "Thanks dude but I gotta go". He was like "Aren't you excited?". After I told him what was going on he didn't quite know what to say. At least the guys at work will be happy next Thursday!

I feel for you. Last November someone tried to borrow my month old CRD in downtown Cleveland when I was working a midnight shift. Left the brick on the driver's seat and glass everywhere. I had a 50 mile drive home in 20 degree weather with no driver's window, that kept me awake at 6am. I think the only reason it wasn't stolen was they attempted but couldn't get the transfer case into neutral. I was already warned by my co-workers not to leave valuables in the car so I didn't loose anything.

Watch out for hidden damage inside the doors. My entire window regulator had to be replaced because it snapped the glass mount (another $250). I also later developed a hole in the seat where the brick hit. Played stupid with the dealer in January and they replaced the seat cover under warranty. Still have a lot of little glass scratches on the soft plastic parts. Should become less noticable with age.

Dude, that truly sucks... Hopefully all will return to as close to normal as can be soon. Try to be positive... It could always be worse one way or another.

That totally sucks! I've been through it a few times now, and it doesn't get much easier. The first time it happened to me I had NO theft/comp insurance, so it was entirely out of pocket. After that I had $0 deductable comprehensive, so I was home free the next 2 times I got broken into (same year). Even when it's entirely paid for, it still leaves you with that angry feeling in the pit of your stomach.

But do you seriously leave your laptop, GPS, and digital camera in your jeep in NY?? Do you at least have the factory alarm (and did it go off?).

The way it sounds they didnt open the door. Thats the only thing with the factory alarm, the door must be opened for it to go off. I think it should have the $130 sensor since it is a 30k jeep!! Stupid jeep.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I know what you're going through. I had a car (new car - too) stolen when I lived in the city. Long story short - I got it back damaged and had it fixed but was mad for weeks. Anyway, I bought a toggle switch and wired it to the ignition and mounted it in the heater duct on the drivers side left at the floor. So when I parked I could flip it off and the car would not start. It was a real pain though as I had to remember to switch it on or off all the time but the car was never stolen again. ( only one other person knew it was there) I also lost stuff that was in the car. Well anyway I now do not leave anything in plain sight when I can help it. Never had a problem since. That was a long time ago.

Anyway, I hope all turns out well for you. - There should be an open season on these idiots.

Al

Maybe if one L.O.S.T member shot 5 thieves then they would all be dead? We could solve a very big problem!

I started to think about it and instead of shooting them you can give them the 5 second ride of their life.

Mike - - That thing looks nastier than my .357. Didn't know you could get those but that is a good idea..........for the first offence.........for the second offence I vote for lead. Everyone up here has a closet full of lead slingers and would gladly oblige.
