If you're changing the t-stat, you may as well as do the much-maligned 100k routine...unless you have a modified t-stat.

I'll do the 100K work nearer to those miles when I have the extra $600 or so. As for now the thermostat needs relacing. 77K on the Libby. What is a modified thermostat ? I'm waiting on an aftermarket T-stat. I hope I didn't bump my head.

G-05 or other HOAT and nothing else IMHO. FYI in replacing the tstat 1) a single edge razor scraper (one of those backed ones that fits in a holder) outside of the holder does very well removing the old gasket material; 2) a bit of RTV black on the engine side of the new gasket helps keep it in place during the install; and 3) there are 4 bolts (3 thru the tstat body & gasket into the block and 1 to a bracket above and in front of the tstat) but one of those bolts is almost invisible in the back lower left (looking at the tstat from the passenger tire) of the tstat. That semi-invisible bolt has the same head size as the others but is very hard to reach due to a "hump" in whatever engine part is just below it unless you use a 1/4" drive rig with a 1/4" extension (wobble extension helps). Keep track of where the bolts go as the length is different and keep track of where all the hoses go. Also check out viewtopic.php?f=98&t=56398

If you need a longer write-up drop me an email and I'll send it to you.

Not sure what you mean by an after market tstat, as far as I know they don't exist. The modified tstat likely refers to viewtopic.php?f=5&t=50940 but unless you are already in the pipeline or someone picks up the project that's not an option. The only other option which has worked for some is an inline tstat that's installed leaving the OEM tstat in place (see viewtopic.php?f=5&t=59575&hilit=inline as an example discussion) which seems to work well if a small hole is drilled in the skirt of the tstat. The inline works with an OEM tstat that's in the typical failure mode of opening too early as the inline keeps coolant from flowing thru the radiator a bit longer (a small amount will flow thru the hole in the skirt but that's needed to open the inline in a timely manner - absent that hole an inline opens a bit late and engine temp can spike a bit with is not desired). I am assuming of course that you are replacing your tstat because the engine temp needle on the gauge is not vertical or a needle or so width left of vertical. If that's where the needle rides you tstat is working fine.

No my temp gauge stays at 3/8 in the winter and a bit below 1/2 in the summer. Very slow to warm up when cold.
Thanks for the info. I'll have no problem changing it out.

Yep sounds about like what mine was doing before I replaced it.

A little bit, maybe 1.5mpg lower, but look where I am and you will notice we don't get all that cold all that much of the year (e.g. anytime it was over 70f and I had the AC on the needle was vertical).
