Buddy of mine was able to get my jeep on a lift, while I was inside, put it in 4hi, he said the bearings on the front driveshaft were visible, hence the jingling and clanking in 4wd.

Questions:

if I dont use 4wd until I get it fixed, will she stay intact or possible come apart and damage other items?

If I do take it off, any steps to avoid leaking fluids?

Everything else looks good, should I do boot kit for $100, or get a new/reman one?

Are the cardone brand reman. Ones ok?

Any brand to stay away from?

thank u

Remove front driveshaft
it turns all of the time so better to remove until you repair
no fluids will leak out and you can drive it until Doomsday if you have to
Rebuild kits are like 80/90 bucks, takes 10 minutes to rebuild one after its removed

I need a rebuild kit (for the second time). Where can I find one?

I am not too interested in using the same one as last time.

Thanks.

So how do we know where to tell you to go if we don't know where you bought before?
NAPA has them by the way

The repair kits are the same, doesn't matter brand they will all have the same issue. The boot style used on the transfer case side can catch a rock or other debris in it, which chews up the boot. Until someone offers an accordion style boot as a replacement nothing will change. I suggest checking the boot every oil change.

Just discovered that http://www.driveshaftparts.com has recognized that there is a problem with the boot and they have made it available separately from the CV bearing, so if you catch it when the boot is just starting to go you can save some money. I just ordered two of the boot kits to have them on hand.

CV Boot Kit - DriveShaftParts.com ME807BKC - $25

CV Kit - DriveShaftParts.com ME807 - $70

CV Kit - Napa BK 8196772 - Dorman 932-301 - $174

Tommudd,

Good question.. haha I thought there was a sentence in there about what I had used.. oh well. Last time I bought from driveshaftparts.com.

(http://www.driveshaftparts.com/cv-joint ... d_430.html)

They had good service, but the part lasted me 3 months before it suddenly snapped on the highway... pretty scary moment.

How in the? Not sure I'd go blaming what you received from DSP as many are using it with zero problems. What part snapped exactly? Was there any noises before breakage? What condition was the boot in?

If you're asking about my post, then here is what happened.

I changed the piece around the middle of this summer. Worked perfectly on and off the road for a couple months. Then suddenly a couple weeks ago, I was driving on the highway to my classes and BOOM! It literally sounded like my engine was at 8000 rpm. Problem was, the tachometer was showing that I was cruising at 3000rpm... I was like WTH is going on?? so anyway, the Jeep felt like it was being held back too... well luckily I was close to school and the noise started to die down... I park my Jeep and get underneath, but I can't see anything... I get back in and drive around the block and there's no noise. When I got out of class, I drove home with no problem or noise. Then when I get home, I parked it, and got underneath and took out the driveshaft for some reason... (I just had a feeling). So anyway, I took it out and found that it was pretty much destroyed. the bearings, ring, and a whatever was in there looked bad. there were multiple crack along the ring in there... so I don't really know what happened, but I guess I'm happy to hear that everyone else isn't having bad problems with it.. oh and you couldn't tell what it was because the boot WASN'T ripped... it's like the damage came from the other side and I know that I put enough grease in there to lubricate things.

Oh well... I'm ok with being 2wd for alittle while. I just need to buy that part before the snow comes in..
