When I took off the grill this thing was sitting behind it. looks like the clip mount or whatevr snapped so its wound around to keep it in place. I have no idea what it is.

That is your ambient air temp sensor,it snaps into a hole in the grill area somewhere.

THanks, I figured it was some kind of temp guage, didn't realize the engine needed to know ambient. What for? Does it help the computer determine a fuel/air mixture?

I guess if you have a temp display like some do, but mine didnt come with one

It must serve another purpose, because I know I have it, and I dont have an EVIC.
I know many KJ's have it and no EVIC.

If it's just for the EVIC, I'm sure Jeep would only install it when equipped with an EVIC.
They wouldn't spend all that extra money on a Temp sensor, just in case the Jeep had one as an option.

If I remember correctly some years had to have it if you had a EVIC or not as it worked with the IAT and ECT so the PCM can properly set the fuel/air ratio.Many Chryslers have this setup and it can and will turn on the MIL if it is not hooked up or working.

For some reason Jeep started installing them in all Jeeps regardless of it it had an EVIC or not (I think in 2005) but before that you only had it if you have an EVIC or OTIS. I had to install it on my 03 and 04 when I installed the EVICs because they did not come with it.

P0073 Ambient Temperature Sensor Circuit High.
