Or at least it sounds like it sometimes.

I have an intermittent sound coming from under the hood. Happens when it gets good and heated up at the end of a day. But then sometimes, like this past Saturday, it went on first thing. Never when a mechanic is around. I drove around town for an hour today and I could not repeat the situation.

Anyway, first thought is a bearing going bad. The sound varies with the engine rpm's. Sometimes it sounds like Orca and then others like a bad bearing. Consistency is a problem. It is not noticed at high rpm's.

This past and the previous Friday nights it really carried on. Doesn't matter if a/c is on or not.

The mechanic is wondering if it is a vacum leak problem or the air flow control. We can not force it to repeat itself. Any clues?

We have taken off the belt and the noise stopped but it would not start when we put the belt back on.

Idler pulley? Would be the first thing I check.. Have a friend give it gas and probe around the engine bay, see if you can pinpoints whats wrong.

The idler pulley was replaced first thing. No help. And we have probed the first chance it was doing it in the shop.

Being so imtermittent makes me think it is not a bearing. But then that is my thinking.

I am not kidding about Orca. Beached whales all over the SC coast. Eskimos are calling for the great whale call. Japanese dignitaries are parked out front.

Seriously this is driving me nuts. Have you noticed. One more sound off and I am getting a harpoon.

One more thing,,,,one of my tire sensor lights went off while driving. That at least acted up the shop and we have determined that it is wrong. I wonder if it is some red clay from up in Fairfield County that the jeep encoutered while scouting for wood goats.

By the way...no noise today.

Orca has been grounded. The alternator after four weeks started screaming long enough to be isolated. Like all weekend. The sceal had changed from a variable squeal to a bag of marbles in each cylinder. $260 later.....
