I have 107K miles on my 3.7L 2005 KJ. During the East Coast Safari, October 7 to 9, it was in the dealership for an unrelated problem. At that time they had to pull the motor out. There was no issue with oil/smoke before. Maybe it is a coincidence but now its burning oil and smoking. The only time I notice smoke is when I'm driving very slow, between 5 and 15. Then if I rev it up smoke billows out. Speed up down the road it goes away as far as I can tell.

When they had it in the garage I had them change the oil. That was about 200 miles ago and I'm down about 1/2 quart! What is happening? I haven't pulled a plug yet to see how it looks.

Check your PCV Valve, it might be clogged up. Other than that it could be carbon buildup, valve seals, or at worst your piston rings.

That’s not good. Valve guides and piston rings come to mind. Get ready for an engine rebuild or a new engine. Nah, it may not be that bad. I would check to see if you have low compression or high compression. Hopefully the engine is burning oil because of worn valve guides or valve guide seals.

Burning oil will foul your plugs which will eventually cause engine misfire. These newer vehicles have such high tolerances which could result in a damaged catalytic converter, so I wouldn’t be driving your jeep until you identify the problem and get it fixed.

I double checked the oil dip stick this morning. With my glasses on this time. Yep, 1/2 quart low. I pulled a spark plug and it was a nice light gray color. Next I'm going to start it up and let it idle for awhile and see what happens. I want more info. for a mechanic to work with.

Okay, I let it set at idle for 15 minutes and it blew lots of blue smoke. This time I could smell the burnt oil. When it was idling there wasn't any smoke.

Make sure they never used the wrong oil or filter!! If you do you own oil changes? I would do one now! They might have over filled the motor! As for the plugs. You need to check them all! not all the Cyl or valve guides are probably wore! you wont know until you check them all. Thats why dealers suck!!!!!!!!

Got it and answered. This whole thing is kind of weird.

X2

If you have worn valve seals, you could probably replace the seals without having to remove the cylinder heads or overhaul the engine.

Since this happened so quickly, then you could have a broken ring. That’s why I said check to see if you have low or high compression. Answering that question will help you solve the problem.

He was replying to the Reverend (tommudd) that he got his PM and answered him. I think Fulltimer is still in the process of diagnosing.

I went out and pulled the easy plug. The one in front/right as you look at the engine. Its gray and the cylinder has 150 PSI. I couldn't get my pressure gauge real tight and there was some hissing from it leaking.

With my back the way it is, that was all I could do. Bending over killed my back. This is why I'm not trail riding any more. I can't even do this simple test on the darn engine. Ya, I pissed!

Is there anyone from LOST who lives nearby that could help you perform a compression check? Worst case scenario, you may have to take your Jeep into a reputable garage and have them diagnose the problem.

I'm in 'the dealership left something unplugged' camp.

This morning when I was driving to Steak n Shake for coffee with the "Old Farts Club" I got the following code: " P2302 Ignition Coil A Sec Circ". I don't know, but I don't think that has anything to do with oil consumption. Just something else going wrong. Well they open in a couple more hours so I'll take my basket of troubles in!

I would be opening up basket of something on THEM since it started after THEY worked on it.
Good luck on the diagnosis, hopefully something simple, easy to fix.

I just got a call from the service manager. He said that something must have stuck when they had the motor laying on its side for a few days. They are going to try some kind of "snake oil treatment" that they use in the shop. Then I should drive it to the next oil change time and watch the oil level. If that doesn't work they may have to take it apart and find the problem.
