Had an issue this morning on the way to work. I had to slow down for a school bus that the driver decided to turn left and that last minute he could. so I was sort of fast off the go pedal and on the brake. Then when I went to go again there was no power. the engine would rev to about 2000 rpm, there was no smoke, just no power. I pulled in to a side street and the engine could hardly idle. I turned it off opened the hood seen nothing wrong, fuel primmer seemed firm too. so I started it again and everything was fine like nothing happened.

Any idea what is going on? this happened to me once before but it has been over a year.

I have changed my oil and fuel filter about a month ago so that is pretty new.

I had the same thing had and the only thing I can figure was my fuel was less then 1/4 a tank. It must have got air but after restart it was normal.

I have about 3/4 tank. I did let it get to the low fuel light before the last fill up.... I have done that a few times and never had that happen before. Not sure that it is related to air from letting the tank run low. My last fill up was Friday too.

Silly question but is your brake light switch hanging up at the brake pedal?

I'm not sure if the PCM is like some cars where they don't want you hitting both the brake and gas at the same time.
This would effectively cause it to cut power.

My Audi allroad was like that until I swapped out the auto for a 6 speed

driving with a foot on the brake and gas is known to cause problems with the CRD. it could be that the switch is not letting go fast enough. I have to check it out.

I would love to have a 6 speed manual but not going to put that much money into it and then I think I would loose towing capabilities.

My first guess would have been fuel filter, but since you just replaced it, that is unlikely, unless you've gotten a tankful of bad diesel.

The standard programming on the CRD's computer cuts power if the brake light is on. So the sticky brake switch is a good guess. If that's not it, let us have another stab at figuring out what is wrong.

If he were riding both pedals or the brake switch was sticking there's a light on the dash that would be flashing :seuss:
I'm not sure what light it is but it's in the owner's manual

I am not sure now. I tried a foot on the brake and gas didn't notice any light on the dash and no limp mode that time. It's been running good all day since.

I only get fuel at a few places most of the time, Ruttter's, Sheetz or Royal Farms.... all are pretty busy stations. None of the name brand oil companies have stations that sell diesel in this area.

I lied there is a shell that has diesel but the posted price is always way high and we have some Hess stations but none of those are along roads I travel very often so I don't tend to fill at Hess often.

As he has a GDE tune, I believe Keith turned off the limp mode for hitting the brake and accelerator at the same time.

still no idea what caused the limp mode or what ever it was yesterday morning. nothing seems to be binding the brake pedal....it looks clean so I doubt that the brake switch is sticking. I do have a GDE tune so that brake and gas thing might be shut off in the ECO tune. I had this same thing happen over a year ago, that was before I had the tune also. then I could not find anything wrong. that time I checked for boost hose leaks and all, I found nothing. there was no CEL that time or this time either. what did happen is a noticeable loss of power, engine seemed to run rough like it was misfiring and it almost felt like it would die at idle when stopped.

Last time all I did was put some Power service in the fuel and buy a filter to keep in case it happened again but it never did until yesterday and the fuel filter was changed little more than a month ago this time.

I am wondering if I got fuel that was somehow contaminated with a small amount of Gasoline and that would cause it when it got mixed with the diesel and burnt in the engine. I know that I would have never put the wrong fuel in. I am very careful about that... the few times since I have had the CRD and driven Gassers I have pulled those up by the diesel pump out of habit. I never let anyone drive it with out me there and I always pump the fuel.

Changing a fuel filter is not a bad idea - especially if it's been on a while.

Maybe the ETC light does not go on, but the same thing happens when brake and throttle are applied at the same time. I have an "old" HOT tune and the ETC light works. Restart cures it. This fits what is described in this case.

fuel filter was changed some time near the end of September 2011 when i changed the oil. don't think it's been near long enough to think about that given it has ran very normal several days since. if nothing else like that happens soon I am just going to do power service treatment the next few tanks and maybe it was the computer thinking i was in the gas and brake.

First time i did my fuel filter mine did that to,about one week after, dont worry, its probably some air trapped in the line,or air went in the pump because of the low fuel, when the fuel goes down in the tank, with the motion of the jeep it could happen,so dont worry, fill her up,bleed and everything is good to go

Mine is ok since that, nothing wrong since that freaky 5 minutes on the side of the street!! ,but i understand your feelings,at the moment i thought i had lost the turbo,or even something wrong with the engine, the idle was so wrong i was going crasy, and im not hard on the jeep, maintenance is up to date,i really take good care of it,so yes i was in panic mode hahaha :ROTFL:

But finally,like you,i turned off the engine,started back after 5 min,like new!!!

Now when i change the fuel filter,i go for a little drive for like 20 mins, come back home and i bleed it again just to be sure, takes about 5 mins and it never happened again, thoses CRD s have their tricks here and there, but i love mine so much... Not so many SUV s out there that goes 30+mpg with that torque,so will keep until i need to push it hahaha.

take a couple of seconds and make sure the filter's still seated properly.
sometimes after a recent change they vibrate loose a bit and cause an air leak.
