Read in the owners manual that a new key fob can be programmed through the EVIC, but I can't seem to get this feature to display.... I need to get an additional key as one has been lost and am looking to avoid goin to the dealer.... can this be done or am I stuck paying the dealer to do this? I've found a few places that sell an uncut key and transmitter and have access to get the key cut but not sure about the programing end of it.....
Thanks,
Tom

You need at least 2 keys to program any more. any time you want to program a new key you need all of them at the same time. if you only have 1 key you need to take it to the dealership to program the other keys.
for the key fob I believe you can get that programmed at some locksmiths. you would have to ask them.

A quick Google search will get you the directions to program the keys.

Yo have to put the first key in the ignition to on, not start..
Then put the second key in the same way, then repeat for all subsequent keys.
(Or something of that fashion )

The manuals are not as clear as they should be.

There are 2 types of keys: 1) the remote access key which allows one to lock/unlock/etc the vehicle and which includes ann ignition key and 2) the "dumb" key which contains a programmable chip that allows you to manually unlock the vehicle and start it. NOTE 1: 2005 and 2006 "dumb" key blanks are NOT the same notwithstanding what several "e" commerce sites say. NOTE 2 if you manually unlock the driver's door with a valid version of either type of key (e.g. do not use the remote unlock) the alarm will sound until you use a valid key to turn on the ignition (don't ask me I don't have a clue).

There are 2 types of programming 1) making a key valid for use on a particular vehicle and 2) telling the remote key what action to take when a certain button is pressed and turning autolock features on/off. For an owner to do the former requires 2 valid keys and the owner's manual outlines the steps, see text beginning on pg 16 of the 2005 manual (NOTE I am not personally totally clear if this method works to "validate" a remote key; I do know it works for "dumb" keys). The owner's manual is stored on a shelf in the top of the glove box where it is often overlooked by new owners but if it's not there Sam's NOOB guide or the Jeep site have links where you can get a PDF copy. The latter can be done from the EVIC, see text beginning on pg 132 of the 2005 manual; it might can be done at the ignition but I have an EVIC so I've never bothered to look.

If you only have one key you don't have to go to the dealer. Any good comprehensive locksmith shop can sell you a new key(s) and program same. I'd recommend you get 2, even if it's just 2 "dumb" keys, to avoid future similar problems. Personally I keep 1 buried in the CRD so I can leave if running to keep the turbo happy if I have to make a short stop on the interstate and the other buried in a very obscure spot, one I can barely find if I remember where to look, outside the vehicle for the every so often owner lockout goof.

what has been said is true. if you have 1 key left you need a locksmith or dealer.

if you want a key just to hide under the jeep in case you lock the keys in then a non chiped stupid old fashioned key is good enough to unlock the door. my dealer made me one for $5. it will start the engine but the security system will kill it in seconds so the vehicle can not be driven with that key.

Mine is an 06.
I have both original remote keys and wanted a third water proof non remote key that would unlock, start and run the CRD. I bought one of these from this vendor and you can buy ths key for $6.87 and free shipping :2cents:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-JEEP-DODGE- ... 2a14c3b2a1
I took it to a local lock smith I frequent and he cut the key for free. Then I programmed it using the procedure in the manual, I don't have an evic, and the key works fine.
It will unlock the doors that were locked by the fob and NO ALARM SOUNDS and it will start the engine and allow it to be driven. I tried the key before programming it but didn't try unlocking and the engine would start but shut off in a few seconds like it's supposed to :jester:
One good reason to getting a chipped key is that it's waterproof  I took it in the ocean swimming several times and use it when washing the jeep.

Here's a uncut fob for only $59.98
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-JEEP-KEYLES ... 2a11468695

But unless you have 2 keys it's a trip to a good locksmith that had the equiptment or the dealer. For those with two keys you can get a third for under $20 :JEEPIN:

Non evic vehicles, at least my 06, you can not program how the locks preform, that requires the evic that I don't have.

I think I remember reading that once a key is programmed to that car it can't be used in another but I'm not certain :dizzy:

PAPAINDIGO: I've tried to use the EVIC as per my owners manual several times but it just goes past the option without displaying it....all the other progamable features work fine... :?
Another key of ANY type would be fine....remote or not.... I just want at least 1 spare in the event of something happening to my current one... I guess I'll try to locate a local locksmith that's capable of doing the programing.

EVERYONE ELSE: I've looked at the ebay offerings but I was kind of leary of them actually working as stated..... :? maybe I'll try one of the remoteless ones.... :)

Thanks for the replies!! :D

DIESELIB - now that's interesting. I just went out and checked my vehicle and my EVIC does the exact same thing. Scrolling thru the menu the "Train Remote" option simply doesn't exist. I had not paid much attention to this but in the past I'd noted that the Service Interval is not selectable in 500mi increments as the Owner's Manual says so maybe the manual is wrong on the Train Remote option. I wonder if that's something a dealer has to program the EVIC to do but don't wonder enough to ask. As my vehicle came with 2 keys I was able to program a couple of "chipped" spares using the steps on page 18 of the 2005 Owner's Manual.

My son's (stoutdog) 2006 only came with 1 of the remote keyless entry keys and no "chipped" spares so we ultimately had to get a local locksmith shop to program 2 "chipped" spares which is when I discovered that the 2005 and 2006 "chipped" keys are not the same even though some "e" vendors claim they are.

Glad I'm not the only one experiencing that....kinda thought I was loosing whatever marbles I have left!!! LOL Thanks for verifing that! :D Gonna ask a local locksmith....then off to the dealer if no luck....
