Hey

How long does the glowplug light come on on the dash?? I threw a P0683 Last week and that need to get my GDE present soon to check the codes again. Im running ORM till tuning, so not sure if the CEL is fresh or just more p102...

I have noticed that at an ambiant temperature cold start of 40-50F the coil light on the dash illuminates for only HALF of a second, which even with ceramic/nitro-glycerine plugs, that still seems awfully short.

How long ought the light show for??

I have only had this new toy for a couple weeks so my baselines are still a bit fuzzy

Thanks guys

Per owner's manual "2. Watch the “Glow Plug Indicator Light.” It will stay on for a maximum of 2 seconds, depending on engine
temperature. When the “Glow Plug Indicator Light” goes out, the engine is ready to start." Essentially the light blips on and almost instantly off. Down here I've never bothered to watch it or wait to start although I suppose one really should wait on a real northern winter day. How long the glow plugs run is unrelated to the duration of the light; all the light shows is that the circuit is alive and if glow plug activity is needed they are ready to go when the light goes off.

Thanks... I Guess I am still thinking in terms of diesels of the 20th century

I remember the ol 12v cummins and PowerSmokes, and sitting waiting for the plugs to do their thing... half a second seemed ridiculously short compared to the eternity on the old pigs.

Had both a 1993 and 1994 Dodge Cummins which had a fuel heater grid instead of glow plugs and almost never, down to 20F, bothered to wait on the light to go out. Now my Dad's 1970s 240D Mercedes flat wouldn't start even in hot Florida weather without waiting and that wait bordered on forever.

Mine comes on most mornings now. It stays on for 3-5 seconds if its around or below freezing during the night. I usually turn the key, wait about ten seconds, and then start. Definitely helps out compared to just starting it as if it were a gasser.

*SNIP*

meh... plugs / grid. Never thought much on it: We never saw past the requirement to "wait to start" and the admonishment from the boss that in'n we don't wait to start, we get to "wait to walk" instead...

which, that far out in the countryside, would have really been bothersome, so we "waited to start" LOL

That is right for the current temperatures. When it gets below 32 F you will notice it light up a bit longer. It indicates it is ready to start, but the glow plugs actually stay on past the light turning off. Someone had posted a chart on the site a while back that should how long they actually stayed powered up for past the light going out.

Here...found the thread http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=48938&hilit=+glow+plug+%26+time+
