Hello Lost Jeep people.

Just signed up to the forum. Give you a tidbit about my self, 35 years in the Mechanical industry working on Vehicles Car's,Jeep's, Trucks, Semi's etc if it has wheels I'm not afraid to work on it. I Also worked in the Natural gas compressor industry (Big as you house Compressors) Same with Diesel stationary engines. Enough of this Crap. On to the Jeeps. I have owned a CJ5 "75" 304 3 Speed. Still have a "1980" J10 Truck,"97"Grand Cherokee with 340,000 miles on it. Last but not least a 2005 CRD Liberty. Which I just changed out the timing belt. ( To much Hipe In the Reviews on the web of how to do this, is only a thing. I just purchased the timing pin kit from Sealey Inc)

My real concern is this. Drove the old Girl ("97" Cherokee) the other day then went to the CRD and it sounds like the front axle is engaged when driving down the road. Now I did have to replace the rear torsion arms due to they were rusting out. The rear torsion bar had broken loose from one of the arms. That could contributed to the noise ??? I did notice that my fuel mileage has drop some will keep and Eye on this. I have made sharp right and left turns on hard ground did not noticed any jumping, popping like it was in 4 Wheel drive. Now I have not checked it out yet, is the front differential engaged all the time. I had an S-10 Blazer that it would disengage differential when out of 4 wheel drive. Your thoughts jeep People.

yes - the front axle is engaged all the time, if the front end in good shape - it shouldn't affect the mileage - and no one makes disconnecting front hubs to fit a Liberty.

Thanks you for the reply. I still hear a winding up sound and then a slow down as the speed comes down. I think its either the fan or road noise that is messing with me.

Check the boots on the front drive shaft especially the concave one. When mine "disappeared" there was a noise that was similar to what you describe...no boot, no grease = noise.

I will look at this. Been under the vehicle doing other work . and if I don't focus on one perticular area I will miss it. I think it is there
have to change oil today. Be a perfect time to look. I did do one other thing I had my wife drive the jeep past me at a higher rate of speed. I could not hear any thing except tire noise. My wife tells me that it still sounds the same as it has. :JEEPIN:

Just as a check on tire noise - increase the pressure 5-10 psi
(only long enough to check the noise)

if it's tire - the sound will change - if it's axle - it'll be the same.

I drove down a dirt road not gravel a Dirt Road at 45 mph no noise. Tires!!!! Thanks guys for the input. Dam tires will drive me crazy.
