I have a CEL and the code comes up P1140. I have nothing showing what that is for, is it the EGR?

Guess I will run out to the dealer here in a few minutes.

Just came from dealer and it is a vacuum reservoir boost solenoid switch. The engine runs fine and the turbo works great, so it probably a faulty code or intermittent fault. I have an appointment to get it fixed/checked out Thursday.

Just back from the dealership and the code is for EGR failure, cause by wiring harnes failure, plug failure or EGR failure. They talked with engineering and was told to check wiring and conectors if no problem there then replace EGR, the engineer said they are currently averaging 83 failures per day reported. Tech told the guy this was not a farm vehicle and shared the garage with large Tom cat so he didn't figure it was mice chewing wires, so it came down to just order a new EGR and they will call when it gets here. Must have failed is shut position because it will not blow any soot when hammered hard.

Wow, thats really high. At an 83/day average, its just over three months to service the entire years production*. Granted some will never go bad and some will be fixed more than once, but still thats a real problem if I'm understanding that correctly.

*annual production 8,000+/-...is this still anywhere close?

Only about 5000 for '05 models.

Might want to keep that old egr valve! Especially if its failed in the closed position :-) At least long enough to see if your mileage or power increase.

Is this your first egr replacment?

It is a required turn in for warranty. The vehicle has no driving problems and we haven't been checking fuel mileage, but it doesn't seem to have a dropped in mpg's in any amount to be noticed.

How many miles on the vehicle? And you have an extra CCV filter installed too??

My wife just got back from a trip and I had planned to go look again at the Sport CRD's with her. See what she thinks of them. At the cost of EGR's seems like these things just simply aren't worth the bother. Wonder what the problem is.

I got a quote of $180 for the CRD timing belt, but no answer on the labor to install costs. A belt here, an EGR there, glow plug this, brakes that, fan propblems... Kinda scary. Of course you could have my wife's Toyota and its electronic accelerator control problems. Just saw the posts on the new 2007 Hybrid Camry. With all the electronics in that thing, it makes the Liberty look attractive even with the faults.... Makes me wonder who manages these companies. Must be the accountants (no offense meant, my daughter is one, but I would not rely on her to make car design decisions).

Our CRD has 7500 miles on it, and does not have the new CCV filter yet. Hope to have that in a couple of weeks for testing.

Once the these problems are all worked out, this little rig will be a real barn burner. It's just some rush to production bugs to be worked out is all, I thing this is going to be a long life low maintance vehicle once the bug are worked out.

The EGR Flow Control Valve (also known as anti shudder valve or anti run on valve) was replaced today, it would not open but about 30% of full open so fuel mileage may increase.

I'm bumping this thread as I got this engine code P1140, plus the P0403 (EGR) code. I'm running the SEGR mod. I've re-tested the box, and nothing is wrong with it. I installed the bypass plug and still get the engine codes. My next step is to make sure my harness wiring is still intact.

Does anyone have an idea as to what specific fault will set this P1140 code?

HI. I have spent some time searching the net for p1140. Everything I find refers to
Bad WIF sensor, water in fuel lines, etc.
I did find the same code but the way I read it it for a gasser, not applicable here.
It referred to H20 in one of the banks.

Sorry, I can't find more, but still looking.
Steve

Everything I find, Dodge, Ford, VW, etc. all say the same.
Look at the above.

Wow, thanks for the link. Water in fuel - darn. Better get to that filter. Much appreciated!

Bet, I looked at 50 sites and all same same thing.
Except for the gasser, it list bank 2, blah blah, so didn't read it much.
I am surprised the WIF light didn't shine?
Oh, Oh, Maybe you don't have it connected?
You devil, bet you changed Fuel manager heads, didn't you?

UFO,

When I had an issue with my SEGR (short between pins on the one LM339 that was caused while driving), it caused a P0402 and a P1140. The car was also barely driveable at this point and I had to throw the bypass in to remedy the situation until I examined the board and found the problem.

Anyways, I'd probably examine the wiring to the EGR myself if the SEGR passes the bench test. If it's still not working with the bypass on, then I'd think one of your connections to the EGR in the runway came loose.

Also, my code scanner (Actron CP9175) said the P1140 was water in fuel, but also mentioned something like "Manufacturer Specific." I forget the exact wording, but it made it sound like the P1140 code could mean something other than water in fuel. For some reason I think it may have mentioned something about fuel metering too, but I could very well be mistaken about that, since I unfortunately didn't take very good notes in my head. ;)

It wouldn't hurt to check for water in fuel, but my guess is it's not actually the culprit in this case, espectially given this snippet from earlier in the thread:

Code specific. In the gasser yes it means something else.
UFO soldered most of the SEGR boards, so I doubt he needs to check his own work after
hundreds of these.
His EGR cannot fail, it is not even wired but yes, he could have some trouble within
the harness itself. Maybe pinched wire touching another but thats like winning the
lotto. Slim to none.
Thanks for the imput. That's why we are all here. To help each other.

Personally, if I had tested through everything on the board like UFO did, I'd attack the runway wiring next. The wire coming from pin 4 would probably be my first line of attack, since using the bypass plug didn't fix things.

I agree.
Simpler to make sure he doesn't have a water problem first, than
go after the harness next. 4 and 5 would be the place to look.
If he got some bad fuel. If he has changed the fuel head manager
so the WIF doesn't work. That is the simpler solution to look at first.
Hit's cold out where he lives, so that may be a factor in both
places to look.
Steve
