So the past few weeks ive been noticing that every now and then ill hear the power steering pump making its whining noise when sitting at a light or drive through with the wheel at center position. Sounds like something is worn or going. Im going to start with flushing/changing the fluid. Are there any secrets to doing this job....Does anyone have anything written up on this procedure? Anyone recommend any fluid over another?

Thanks in advance
JD

were you turning the wheel at all? If not are you sure it is the power steering pump? Was the Defrost or AC on... could it have been your AC compressor turning on and off?

No wheel turn. It was def not the clicking sound the compressor makes. It was the plesant whine of the pump, no doubt. :)
Has anyone flushed theirs yet?

Mine whistles when I turn the wheel, the service manual states that that and dirty looking fluid indicates rack failure, that and the leakage at the base of the stearing input shaft...

As for flushing the fluid, I plan on using a turkey baster, and sucking out most of the bad stuff, then disconnect my lines, since I got a new rack, and just let the rest drain, then I was going to try to blow out the lines with air, re prime with new fluid after I replace the rack... I just hope my pump is not bad.

Did this ever work out? I noticed in the past couple of days that mine gives me a wine while turning right hard like pulling into a driveway. I will check the fluids to see if its dirty. How would I know if the pump was going bad? Or the rack has failed?

No, I have not tried this yet. I will get to it this weekend however. Its actually pretty odd. When im sitting with the car running it makes the noise slightly. When I turn the wheel to the left ot goes away and when I turn to the right it gets worse. Im gonna put some of that Lucas fluid in there when i take out the old gunk. Ive had pretty good luck with that in the past.

Advance Auto Parts has a niffty little hand pump with a clear hose on it. It can be used by istself or screwed onto a gallon jug of gear lube for the diffs. Next time I change the rear diff. oil I'll use it to pump the old out and not have to bother draining and resealing the cover.

I'll post here too...

I'm confused (not uncommon). This TSB seems to say that our KJ's (2002-2004 MY) should be using ATF+4, right?

I think thats correct. They should be using it, but only if you completely drain the system and and blow out out all the lines and then refill w/ atf+4.
