Also about my KJ, I had the transmission and transfer case serviced a couple of months ago and the tech said he saw a lot of metal shavings on the plug and in the fluid of the TC so I am a little worried about that too.

I just bought a 97 Land Cruiser not long ago. Factory lockers and plenty of aftermarket support. It has twice the room as the KJ. Only down fall is the 10-13 MPG it gets. I bought to do a diesel swap in the summer. I still have my CRD which I won't be parting with.

I've thought about Toyota and I like the product but I all I know is Jeep (and VW) so the Toyota is less appealing to me. And I think they cost a bit more too. Bang for the buck is always an issue.

What do you all think?

what kind of terrain/country will you be wheeling in? i know here in PA we have a lot of tight wooded trails that 4 door JK's and even some cherokee's have a hard time getting through.

also how many people will be with you on your trips? if only 2 a TJ or JK brute would be AWESOME. if 3 or 4 a XJ would probably the cheapest/most able offroad to build.

if you want something really reliable and mostly on road driving and the 'occasional' offroad/camping trip. a toyota FJ cruiser wouldnt be 'terrible'. i've driven a few and they are very nice. however they are wide and they all seem to get their roof bashed in on trees right above the back window. the aftermarket support is there though.

I'm about 80% Desert/20% forest.

If you have the money, I’d buy a new 4 door JK. If money was somewhat tight, I’d buy an XJ. When it comes to expedition style travel, cargo space is your friend. Plus, there’s a fair share of aftermarket support for the XJ and JKU.

I'm building my KJ and XJ for camping, expedition travel, back-country exploring, hunting, and towing off-road trailers. Here are my build threads:

KJ

XJ

Ditto.
I'm still in love w/ my old XJ that my son bought from me. I Will build another one. For the money the XJ is the best Jeep in my opinion. You can buy them fairly cheap and mods and such are very easy to come by on the used market as others upgrade theirs. Lots of room inside and on the roof for a large rack or tent. And they wheel like mountain goats! :JEEPIN:

I've seen pics of that XJ and I like it. They've always seemed more capable than the KJ to me, and easier to work on.

A Volkswagen syncro Westfalia Vanagon Tristar with either a Subaru STI engine transplant or a Porsche flat six transplant!!!
An off road camper van that can go the same places a lifted KJ can go, and can do 130 mph all day long!
Check out YouTube!

At the very least a Syncro Westfalia with a VW diesel engine!
Awesome vehicle!

I do like the VW Syncro, however, I am pretty sure it would be more difficult to locate parts for the VW (Subaru/Porsche) than it is for a Jeep or Toyota, etc. were I to need any for an on-trip repair. Also the aftermarket for Jeep XJ is huge compared to VW Syncro. I must say a diesel is not un-appealing to me though...

First one is the Range Rover 127
one of the Defender series of models
spent a lot of time in one my first trip over to Tanzania and fell in love with driving them, want one bad!
They make several models based off the Defender line with 2 doors/4 doors/2 door wagons etc. This model is more for military or electric companies etc to take crews out but have a small pickup type bed. Basically made by cutting the rear off a station wagon model
Makes it easy to haul bananas to town from out on the farm we found :ROTFL:

I personally plan on going with a 4 door JK as soon as i can afford it, but if i was going to attempt to build one now or very soon i would go with an XJ. dime a dozen and cheap as heck to build.

A JK would be great but for me too expensive for an off-road vehicle. There are surprisingly few XJs for sale in the Los Angeles area.

If you’re not worried about the $ I’d say go JK all the way. Otherwise if you don’t want to beat something that nice up, go XJ as others said a dime a dozen and cheap to mod, gets parts for etc.

When I sell the KJ I’d love to pick up a JK but I use mine as a daily driver / winter wheels and fact is I’ll probably end up getting another F150 and lifting that. I really miss the versatility I had with mine for my purposes.
