So I purchased last night a JEt performance stage 2 chip for my 2003 KJ Renegade 5speed.

I know that this chip requires a 180deg. thermostat.
Since I am going to have to remove the coolent to replace the thermostat (because it is on the bottom of the engine) I was wondering if there is any coolent brand that is better then others?

What are your thoughts?

Zerex G-05 is your only proper aftermarket choice. Nothing else I know of is a HOAT coolant other than Mopar or Later model Ford stuff. Zerex G-05 will be the cheapest option and Napa should have it or can order it. Using the wrong type can damage the water pump of some Chrysler engines. "Universal" coolants, like Prestone are not the correct chemestry no mater what the parts jockey at whatever parts store you go to says.

Just go to Napa and pick up some HOAT it is cheap and if your looking for aftermarket cooling go with some Purple Ice by royal purple.

Like stated only HOAT coolant,Chrysler dealer,Ford Dealer,or Zerex GO5.

Oh and do not install a 180 degree t-stat in your KJ.Your mpg's will tank since you will not get into closed loop operation or take forever to get into closed loop and most likely the check engine light will turn on and display the P0128 code.Keep the 195 degree t-stat.The PCM will learn around the chip in about 1-2 weeks anyways so no need for the lower temp t-stat.

You think I should keep the 195 even though I am putting the stage 2 chip in? According the jet performance the stage 2 chip requires a 180 deg therm.

You dont think the chip will calabrate for the 180 and therefore not throw a code?
Thoughts?

Keep the 195 t-stat,the chip will not calibrate nothing.9 years with the chip and 195 t-stat here,I only keep the chip for the trans shifting which the TCM does not learn around, learned around the engine mods about 1 week after install.

Yes TJ but his rig is a 5-speed manual, so correct me if I'm wrong, but no trans shifting gains from the chip.. So what is the point of installing one?

From what I have read and they have told me it changes some of the maps and timing and some other perameters that the computer does not "learn". We will see what happens.

I use 91 but have to regardless because of vehicle weight. The PCM will learn around the jet chip.

just installed the chip.
What a difference!
I can really feel it in the down shift.
Just had to take a trip to NJ I had the gas milage up to 20.1 (I have never seen those numbers before, even when ti was stock)

Im pretty happy.

Troy, I know your a smart guy and you know your stuff when it comes to KJ's but I am really hoping that your wrong about the PCM learn.

Same thing happened for all my mods. A few days of whoa what a difference and then back to normal.

As for the original question no, like all fluids and parts, not all collants are created equal. Id go for zerex or mopar. Oh and i 100% agree with not doing a cooler thermostat as the engine wont reach the proper temp which means it will run rich.

The worst stuff possible to put in any cooling system not designed for polypropylene coolant.

Don't worry, it's compatible.

"Product Description
AMSOIL Antifreeze & Coolant (ANT) is formulated to provide benefits far beyond those found in today’s conventional antifreeze and coolant products. This revolutionary formulation provides maximum antifreeze and cooling protection in the most extreme temperatures and operating conditions. And unlike conventional ethylene glycol-based products, which are highly toxic and even fatal, AMSOIL Antifreeze & Coolant is formulated with propylene glycol. It is biodegradable and its low toxicity limits the threat to children, pets and wildlife.

AMSOIL Antifreeze & Coolant provides even greater benefits:

Lasts Longer
AMSOIL Antifreeze & Coolant contains a proprietary poly organic acid technology. It eliminates the need for supplemental coolant additives and recharging cooling systems. AMSOIL Antifreeze & Coolant provides extended service life in all gasoline and diesel vehicles. It can be used for seven years or 250,000 miles in passenger cars, light-duty trucks, vans and recreational vehicles. It lasts seven years or 750,000 miles in over-the-road diesel trucks. Also for motorcycles, ATVs, snowmobiles and closed marine applications. AMSOIL Antifreeze and Engine Coolant lasts longer than conventional products.

Compatible With Other Fluids
AMSOIL Antifreeze & Coolant is dyed neutral yellow and is compatible with all ethylene and propylene antifreeze and coolant formulations on the market, including DEX-Cool®, Sierra® and Zerex®. It is also compatible with fully formulated diesel anti-freezes and other organic acid technology (OAT) and hybrid organic acid technology (HOAT) formulations.

Stops Leaks
AMSOIL Antifreeze & Coolant adheres to metal. It self-seals hairline cracks in welds and seams to prevent leaks, without additional stop-leak products or fibrous materials.

Helps Prevent Metallic Corrosion
Independent tests reveal AMSOIL Antifreeze & Engine Coolant surpassed standards for metallic corrosion. It plates metal to protect even when exposed to acids and salt spray. Standard allowances for loss in aluminum and solder are less than 60 mg. AMSOIL Antifreeze & Engine Coolant lost 0 mg in aluminum and less than 6 mg in solder.

Standards for iron, steel, copper and brass allow a maximum loss of less than 20 mg. AMSOIL Antifreeze & Engine Coolant never exceeded a 3 mg loss in any of those metals in a testing period that was run for 10 weeks, three weeks longer than required tests.

AMSOIL Antifreeze & Engine Coolant (ANT)

• Formulated for heavy-duty and automotive applications
• Good for motorcycles, ATVs, snowmobiles and some marine applications
• Extended drain intervals

Up to seven years or 750,000 miles in Class 8 vehicles
Up to seven years or 250,000 miles in pleasure vehicles

• Universal compatibility
• Safe, biodegradable, non-toxic, non-polluting
• Aluminum engine block compatible
• Silicate- and Phosphate-Free

AMSOIL Antifreeze & Engine Coolant meets the following automotive and heavy-duty service specifications:

• ASTM D-6210 • ASTM D-3306
• ASTM D 6210-98

Composition by Weight:
Total glycols, > 92 percent;
Corrosion inhibitors and antifoamants,
= 3 percent; Water, < 5 percent

Boiling Point (sea level):
219° F at 40 percent concentration,
222° F at 50 percent,
225° F at 60 percent;
increase by 40° to 45° F if a 15 psi
radiator cap is used"

Gotta stop believing what they say.

What that junk actually does...............

Quote:
Propylene glycol oxidizes when exposed to air and heat, forming lactic acid. If not properly inhibited, this fluid can be very corrosive, so pH buffering agents are often added to propylene glycol, to prevent acidic corrosion of metal components.

Besides cooling system breakdown, biological fouling also occurs. Once bacterial slime starts, the corrosion rate of the system increases. Maintenance of systems using glycol solution includes regular monitoring of freeze protection, pH, specific gravity, inhibitor level, color, and biological contamination.

Propylene glycol should be replaced when it turns a reddish color.

Plus Ford, that also only recommends using HOAT coolants, has a TSB stating any use of propylene glycol coolant in there vehicles will damage the cooling system and void any warranty dealing with the engine and cooling system(including the HVAC system).

Propylene glycol is only used for cooling systems where food prep is taking place as it's non-toxic.It has no place in automotive systems as it does more damage then 10 year old ethylene glycol coolants.
