Heres the run down. Ive been wanting a CRD for about 4 years now. Ive owned a kj gas v6 limited for 4 years and like its size and versatility. Finally found a beautiful one perfect price, good milage and perfectly maintained. So i fly 2000 miles to get her. Drive it perfect no studders, wow torque!!! Well after driving back after paying it off. Two huge recks on the intersate puckered around them glad that was not me... and after 24 hours of driving im almost. Home. Almost... Booom.

No nothing went wrong with the jeep. It was a SEMI!!! I guess that on a accend up the mountain it broke something in its tranny and as it went down hill it blew its parts all over the road. The anvil i hit was a drive shaft. By the looks of the jeep after i am able un weld the friction welded pan underneath, front diff - pieces. engine... hope its ok. I still dont know whats going to happen with the insurance but looking at worst possible senario. I HAVE TO FIX IT.

I am very techinical savy electrically and mechanically but would like a hand to determine amount of investment to fix.

OIL from engine every where - most likely punctured oil pan. Im assuming just that since when i came to a hault the engine was idling normally. I immediately shut her off since i didnt want to mess anything up.
The place where it bolted me skyward was on the pumkin of the fron diff so i know it is ruined.

Guessing the engine is ok what do you think parts can come up too? i got plasma cutter and welder and lots of tools so i know i can tackle everything myself.

I think worst case i can make it a 2wd until i get some money together.

Wow! So sorry to hear that! Wonder what triggered that one..

Hope the permanent damage is minimal - perhaps fortunately (if there is such a thing) the drive train might not be CRD specific and make it easier to pick up replacements at the salvage yard?

Good luck

So far this year, your experience gets the "Worst Thing That has Happened to a CRD Award".

Or is Geordi the one?

No, he wins. Mine was a freak transfer case accident (which did happen in December, BTW) but after years of ownership that in theory I could have known about the TC having a problem. His... Wow that sucks!

I agree, it sounds like you may have punched the oil pan, and the drivetrain / body undersides are NOT CRD SPECIFIC so don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

You are probably going to have to fight with the trucking company's insurance about this, but on the plus side, they should be more willing to "make you whole" (key phrase there) than a car insurance company might. Their first offer will be to buy you out of the vehicle entirely, I sense that you might not want to go that route. Thats where the "make you whole" part comes in. Good luck, you might want to consult a good lawyer about this.

Bummer but maybe your luck will turn around after this. In 9/08 when a dump truck rear ended my 2005 KJ CRD Sport at a red light their insurance company did not even blink at a settlement that got me a 2005 KJ CRD Limited loaded (lacked only the GPS, heated seats, and the tranny to gas tank skids) with 26k miles vs my 16k miles and like $1,000 left over. Helped that I already had the replacement lined up before negotiations started and that there were no injuries involved even if my rear roof line did wind up just aft of the driver's seat.

Ill load some pics to show the damage and the distance of the wreck i mean i was bouncing around the freeway like i was trying to do some monster truck demolishion. Im glad my pregnant wife did not go with me on the trip even though she wanted to. Its amazing i didnt flip the cop said someone is watching out for you.

by the way i was not going the speed limit which is 80 here in texas. Just imagine if i was!!!!

She was all original and i clocked her at 26 mpg heavy head wind at 75 to 80mph. I was happy!

on the interstate in west texas it is 80. remember that texas is very very big, 80MPH seems slow.

Cyrut I rebuild jeeps for a living, based on what you described I think there is a good chance that your insurance company will write off the vehicle. Be prepared to step into the totalled out zone.

If that does happen then you might be able to do a buy back and fix it yourself.

If for whatever reason you don't want to do a buyback yourself I am always interested in another CRD project, if your not interested in keeping it yourself that is, keep me in mind.

Oh, @cyrut2, that really does top the list of year's saddest tales. I'm so sorry to hear of the accident, but I am glad that YOU weren't injured.

Having anvils, driveshafts, entire logs, etc. jump on you sucks.

@SirSam, you sound like my brother, who, last I checked, owned 17 Corvairs, some destined for parts.

Yeah - I10 from San Antonio to El Paso is 80 - it 550+ miles - it's really interesting for the first 5 minutes or so.....

80 is too slow for that road - although probably as fast as I want to go in the KJ - in the summer at 100+ days - lots of road gators & blown tires.....

Sorry to hear about the accident - Glad you weren't hurt

Hey naturist - you do realize you can take a Corvair and make it mid engined - with an Olds Toronado transaxle and just about any General Motors V8 will fit.....

Hey, @ATXKJ, my brother is a purist, he'd never do that.

But your suggestion reminds me of the mid-engine Mini I saw once. Guy took a 1960s era Mini and put a 357 Corvette engine, transmission, and rear end in it. Yes, to drive it, he had the front of the engine tucked under his armpit. Way too much power in a straight line, and horrible cornering. I think he drove it in an autocross just once before tearing it apart for parts for other cars.
