I have a question. In my 2005 Jeep Liberty Brochure it says that the groung clearance for the 4x4 is 9.4 inches. In last month's Motor Trend there was a comparo between Renegade, FJ, Exterra, and H3. They listed Renegade's running ground clearance at 6.5 inches. I am not an experienced off-roader so I have two questions. First, what is the difference between ground clearance and running ground clearance. Second, which is the correct clearance for a stock Renegade. Thanx-Joe
Yeah, I read that article, too (I think it's the April issue). It wasn't very nice to the Liberty, but all the points they made were valid. Jeep lies about their ground clearance - the way they measure it makes it look a lot better than it is. The tires on the FJ, Xterra and H3 are all 265mm width or larger - the Liberty can BARELY even fit on that size, and only with a lift.
Yeah, clearance for a stock renegade 4x4 is about 6.4". You lose a little clearance for having 4WD, and you lose a little for the skid plates and rock rails. Ironic when you think about it that the Liberty with the worst clearance is the one intended to be the "offroad" model, the Renegade 4x4.
