Check the shaft play on the induction side of the turbo.

Are you checking it when the engine is cold?

"minimal" can have a wide variance. I check my turbo often, when stone cold (sitting 12 hours or more) the side to side play is hardly noticable. With the engine warm I would say there is no play at all in the shaft. Then again your fingers may be more sensitive than mine. If in doubt, get a second opinion, you dont want the thing to grenade on you! :2cents:

The noise has been there from day one, even when the turbo was new.

Unfortuately that dosen't mean your turbo is OK. New or rebuilt?

The turbo checks out OK and is not a concern, myself and the tech both confirmed that.

Factory OEM install.

A simple test. restrict the airflow into the engine by blocking a small portion pre air cleaner to increase the load on the shaft. then try running the engine without the air filter to decrease the load on the shaft. if the noise changes or goes away you may have found the problem.

racetracer - I have the same issue. Did you ever find the problem? Mine started about three weeks ago and it is getting a little worse. Ticking is not there when cold, but is quite evident when warmed up. Sitting in the vehicle with the windows down at a stoplight, and you can hear it. It does get faster with rpm.

What did you find?

I used this stuff " http://www.auto-rx.com " and it got rid of the ticking.

Don't know what it was.

the fact that an oil cleaning solvent resolved the ticking strongly suggests to my mind that the issue involved the valve train, and probably the valve lifters.
